Die Erfindung betrifft einen Schalter zum Schutz eines elektrischen Stromkreises: - mit einer Auslöseeinrichtung (AE) zur Unterbrechung des elektrischen Stromkreises, - mit einem Summenstromwandler (ZCT), durch den Leiter des elektrischen Stromkreises zur Ermittlung von Differenzströmen geführt sind und der eine erste Wicklung aufweist, an der ein Differenzstrom abnehmbar ist, - mit einem Stromsensor (Shunt) zur Ermittlung von Stromwerten des elektrischen Stromkreises, - mit einem Spannungssensor zur Ermittlung von Spannungswerten des elektrischen Stromkreises, - mit einer Testtaste (T), - mit einer Fehlerlichtbogensimulationseinheit (ATSG), die einen Eingang und zwei Ausgänge aufweist, - mit einem Mikroprozessor (MCU), der mit der Testtaste, dem Stromsensor, dem Spannungssensor, der ersten Wicklung des Summenstromwandler, dem Eingang der Fehlerlichtbogensimulationseinheit und der Auslöseeinrichtung verbunden ist, und derart ausgestaltet ist, dass bei Überschreitung bestimmter Stromgrenzwerte oder bei Vorliegen eines Fehlerlichtbogens eine Unterbrechung des elektrischen Stromkreises durch die Auslöseeinrichtung erfolgt, wobei der Summenstromwandler eine zweite Wicklung (NT) aufweist, die direkt oder über einen ersten Widerstand (RT) mit dem Mikroprozessor verbunden ist, wobei die Signale der Ausgänge der Fehlerlichtbogensimulationseinheit an Stelle der Strom- oder/und Spannungswerte dem Mikroprozessor durch ein Testsignal zuführbar sind.

A test circuit (20) for a residual current circuit breaker (10) is described, the residual current circuit breaker (10) being adapted to pass from a closed state to an open state to interrupt a neutral branch circuit (1, 11) and a phase branch circuit (2, 12) upon detection of a leakage current, wherein the test circuit (20) is adapted to be fed by a mains voltage supplied by the phase and neutral circuit branches. The test circuit (20) comprising: - a first input circuit node (Nl) electrically connected, or adapted to be electrically connected, to the neutral branch circuit (1, 11); - a second input circuit node (N2) electrically connected, or adapted to be electrically connected, to the phase branch circuit (2, 12); - a test resistance (Rtest); a test switch (C3) operable by means of a test button (21) to connect the test resistance (Rtest) between the first (Nl) and the second (N2) circuit node so as to simulate a leakage current; - an electronic control circuit (22) configured to be fed by the neutral circuit branch and by the phase circuit branch and comprising an electronic time counter adapted to vary and store a time count value and reset it upon pressing of the test button (21); - an optical or acoustic signalling device (D5) controlled by the electronic control circuit (22) for providing an acoustic and/or optic signal upon reaching a given time count value by the electronic time counter. Method and system for performing arc fault and ground fault detection in a dual function CAFI/GFCI circuit breaker uses two analog-to-digital converters (ADC), one for performing arc fault sampling and one for performing ground fault sampling. Each ADC operates independently of the other ADC and may be accessed as needed by the microcontroller without interfering with the operation of the other ADC. Such simultaneous use of multiple ADCs minimizes or eliminates the need for complex time slicing and similar control schemes, thus freeing up the microcontroller for other operations and fault detection related tasks.

For example, a differential current may be detected using at least one sensor by temporarily enabling sampling of current flowing through one or more conductors. Additionally, current flow may be temporarily altered in order to sample current in a system. The measurements may be handled locally and/or remotely and appropriate actions may be taken to enhance the overall safety of the system.
