Paper is made by forming a thick stock cellulosic suspension, flocculating the thick stock by adding a relatively high molecular weight and relatively low cationic charge density polymer, diluting the flocculated thick stock to form a thin stock and then draining the thin stock to form a sheet. Usually coagulant is added to the thin stock before drainage and best results are achieved by adding coagulant followed by anionic colloidal material such as bentonite. The process can be operated to give good retention and good formation and, if the thick stock is dirty, to minimise pitch problems.

A microparticle system for use as a retention and drainage aid in the production of alkaline and acid paper products comprises a high molecular weight flocculant polymer (6) and a silica-acid colloid blend (7), and optionally a cationic coagulant or a medium molecular weight flocculant (5). The high molecular weight flocculant polymer (6) may be added to the furnish after the fan pump (1) and prior to the pressure screen (2); the silica-acid colloid blend (7) may be added to the furnish after the pressure screen (2), and optionally, the coagulant or medium molecular weight flocculant (5) may be added prior to the fan pump (1). Addition of the microparticle system to the paper furnish improves retention and drainage during the papermaking process and sheet formation. The acid colloid of the silica-acid colloid blend (7) is a polymer or a copolymer of a melamine aldehyde acid colloid.

A process of preparing an aqueous composition comprising a polysilicate, wherein the composition is a substantially uniform liquid when measured at 25°C, comprising the steps of, i) providing an aqueous liquid having a source of silicate, ii) adjusting the pH of the liquid to between about 2 and about 10.5, thereby causing polymerisation of the silicate, iii) allowing sufficient time for the polymerisation to proceed to substantial completion and thereby forming a product comprising gelled material, iv) subjecting the gelled material to sufficient shear to form a substantially uniform liquid. The novel aqueous composition made by this process is useful in the manufacture of paper and paperboard either as a mineral filler or as a retention/drainage aid.

The present invention relates to parts of an air cleaner for automobiles such as fixing caps and porous nets made of recycled waste paper and a method of manufacturing the same, which are more economical and environmentally friendly than those for conventional air cleaners made of metal, plastic and urethane. The parts of an air cleaner according to the present invention are obtained by dipping and homogenizing waste paper in a caustic soda aqueous solution, adding to the solution 20-25 parts by weight of paraffin wax, 5-10 parts by weight of acrylamide, 3-5 parts by weight of colloidal silica, and 15-20 parts by weight of polyvinyl alcohol, and mixing, forming, compressing and drying the solution.
