It also provides a color indicator system to optically identify the optimal pH working range at which, for practical purposes, the polymerization speed is the most convenient. The system also relates to the application of these polysilicic products for preserving wooden structures against aging and rot by reinforcing the cellulose microstructures through filling and binding with acidic polysilicate.

An aqueous colloidal silica product, a method of using the aqueous colloidal silica product, and a method of producing an aqueous colloidal silica product, are disclosed. The method of producing the aqueous colloidal silica product incorporates semi-batch addition of alkali metal silicate, which is capable of achieving an aqueous colloidal silica product having desirable physical and chemical characteristics. The aqueous colloidal silica product has been found to be particularly useful as an additive in a papermaking process.

More specifically, the invention relates to a process for preparing aqueous polysilicate microgels which comprises mixing an aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate with an aqueous phase of silica-based material having a pH of 11 or less and an additional compound which is a metal salt other than an aluminium salt, to polysilicate microgel per se and to the use thereof as flocculating agents in paper making and water purification. The invention further relates to a process for the production of paper from a suspension of cellulosic fibres, and optional filler, which comprises adding to the suspension at least one cationic or amphoteric organic polymer and a polysilicate microgel, forming and draining the suspension on a wire.
