A photochromic material adapted for coating light transmissive materials. The photochromic material contains photosensitive silver halide crystals having dimensions in the range of approximately 50 Angstroms to 800 Angstroms. The silver halide crystals are surface doped with copper ions and another sensitizer selected from mild reducing agents, thioethers, or sulfur-bearing ions and are treated with an agent to accelerate the forward reaction and control the reverse reaction. The accelerants are ions selected from the group consisting of cobalt, chromium, manganese, magnesium, and rare earth metals such as cerium, samarium and europium. The agent for controlling the reverse reaction is one that confers electrical conductivity on the material and while to this end glycerol containing a high concentration of metal ions, methane sulfonic acid and benzyltrimethyl ammonium chloride are useful, the preferred agent is phosphoric acid. The crystals are dispersed in one or more protective polymers that do not irreversibly bind halogen.

L'invention est mise en oeuvre par l'utilisation d'un tensio-actif destiné à des dispersions photographiques de particules très fines. Trois types desdits tensio-actifs sont identifiés comme suit: tensio-actif type A comprenant une terminaison hydrophobe comportant 6 à 22 atomes de carbone dotée d'une ou de plusieurs chaînes hydrophyles fixées comprenant au moins 8 groupes d'oxyéthylène et/ou glycédyle éther terminés ou non par une charge négative telle qu'un groupe de sulfate; tensio-actifs type B olygomères en blocs comprenant des blocs de polyoxypropylène hydrophobes (A) et des blocs de polyoxyéthylène hydrophyle (B) liés comme suit: ABA, BAB, AB,(AB)n=G=(BA), ou (BA)n=G=(AB)n, G représentant une fraction organique de connexion et n étant compris entre 1 et 3; tensio-actifs de sucre type C, comprenant 1 à 3 terminaisons hydrophobes comportant 6 à 22 atomes de carbone, dotée d'une ou de plusieurs chaînes hydrophyles fixées de mono ou d'olygosaccharide, terminées ou non par un groupe chargé négativement tel qu'un groupe de sulfate. It is desirable from an economic standpoint to be able to more rapidly develop silver halide photographic elements. It has been found in the practice of the present invention that by a combination of particular grain sizes, ratio of gelatin to silver halide, and coating weights, the drying time of emulsions can be reduced without adversely affecting sensitometry.

A sheet of silver halide photographic light-sensitive material is disclosed, which is suitable for an ultra-rapid processing and improved on decreased fog due to corner cutting the sheet. The sheet of photographic material is comprised of a ight sensitive layer, provided on a support, containing a silver halide grain composed of at least two phases and the silver iodide content of outermost phase is at least 1 mol% lower than that of inside phase contiguous to said outermost phase, and 10 % to 100 % of surface area of said silver halide grain is occupied with (111) face, and the total gelatin amount of component layers on the same side of the support including said light-sensitve layer is within the range of from 2.0 g/m² to 3.5 g/m².

A silver halide photographic light-sensitive material comprising a support having the first photographic structual layer comprising one or more layers on a side of the support and the second photographic structual layer comprising one or more layers on the other side of the support, in which at least one of the photographic structual layers comprises a silver halide light-sensitive emulsion layer, and the total amount of gelatin contained in the photographic structual layer comprising the silver halide emulsion layer is within the range of from 2.00 g/m² to 3.50 g/m². The uppermost layer of the photographic structual layer comprising the silver halide emulsion is formed by coating of a solution having a surface tention of from 15 to 26 dyn/cm, and the second photographic stuructual layer is coated and gelled between coating and drying of the first photographic structual layer. The photographic material is improved in the adaptability for super-rapid processing with the total duration of 20 to 60 sec. and the unti-scratch property.
