摘要： An easy to use on-line guide provides the user of a multiple channel television broadcast system with a wealth of programming information in a simple format that is easy to understand. The guide enables the user to easily select a particular program to watch. In particular, when the guide is presented to the user, the guide covers only a portion of the actual television screen or display. The remaining portion of the television screen continues to broadcast the audio and video of the currently selected program. As a user scans through the guide and moves the pointer from one station to another, the system responds by automatically tuning to the channel pointed to by the pointer and provides the audio and displays the video in the portion of the screen not covered by the guide. Furthermore, a written description of the program currently broadcasted on a station that the cursor currently points to is also shown. In addition, the system provides an innovative mechanism to enable the user to scan program information of channels that the user has designated as his favorite channels. In another embodiment, a program list that is oriented according to the program, instead of the channel, is presented.

摘要： A telephone line monitoring circuit uses an optoisolator (OPTO 2) to convert the telephone line current to a voltage which is applied to the input of an A/D converter (118). The A/D values are coarse values representing telephone line current. The A/D is sampled at a predetermined interval to identify changes introduced by the telephone company central office, and to take those changes into account when deciding if an extension telephone has gone off-hook. When a customer causes an extension telephone to go off-hook, the line current divides between the extension telephone and the IRD modem (100), and such change is detected.

摘要： A circuit is provided to detect when a variation in a power supply provided to a smart card has occurred, indicating a possible fault in the smart card. As an example, the circuit detects this variation by determining when the power supply has dropped below a reference voltage. If this happens, the circuit will modify the smart card control signals, for example, by clamping them at or near ground potential, thereby preventing any possible damage to either the smart card or the smart card reader.

摘要： A controllable crystal oscillator, producing a clock signal at a desired frequency, includes a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (110) producing a signal at a subharmonic of the desired frequency. The voltage controlled crystal oscillator is coupled to a first duty cycle corrector (120), which produces a signal having substantially a desired duty cycle. The first duty cycle corrector is coupled to a frequency multiplier (130), which produces a signal at substantially the desired frequency. The frequency multiplier, in turn, is coupled to a second duty cycle corrector (140). The second duty cycle corrector produces the clock signal at the desired frequency and having the desired duty cycle.

摘要： The user (102) communicates through a digitizing writing surface (26) with the audio/video control apparatus (20). An on-screen display (32, 34) is generated, providing the user (102) with a user environment in which a wide range of different tasks and functions can be performed. The digitizing writing surface (26) can be incorporated into a hand-held remote control unit (24) and the audio/video control apparatus (20) may likewise be incorporated into existing home entertainment or computer equipment. By tapping on the writing surface (26) a command bar (32) is presented on the screen, allowing the user (102) to select among various functions. Included in these functions is an on-screen programming feature (158, 148), allowing the user to select programs for viewing or recording by entry of user-drawn annotations or commands via the writing surface (26).

摘要： A remote control system for controlling a television receiver or the like, which has an operating portion including a diaphragm (3) and at least two light receiving elements (4). In the remote control system, light issued from an external light source (1) is received by the light receiving elements (4) through the diaphragm (3). Further, the direction in which the operating portion is oriented is detected on the basis of light receiving signals outputted by each of the light receiving elements. Furthermore, in a unit such as a television receiver to be controlled, a cursor is displayed at a position toward which the operating portion is turned on the screen of the unit. Then, the cursor is moved on the screen in response to change in the direction in which the operating portion is oriented. Subsequently, a desired operation is performed by depressing a switch of the operating portion when the cursor is superposed on an indication of the desired operation in a menu displayed on the screen. Thereby, the remote control system can be very easy to manipulate.
