The invention relates to a method and circuit for regulating the signal level fed to an analog-digital converter. In order to regulate the signal level fed to an analog-digital converter, the rate of change at which the output signal of the analog-digital converter (4) is temporally modified, especially the modification rate of an output bit of the analog-digital converter, is measured and compared with the specified value (SP). The signal level fed to the analog-digital converter (4) is adjusted according to the result of this comparison.

An automatic gain control method for quickly dissolving the saturation of an A/D converter even if the input power level of a radio reception signal sharply increases and preventing the control from becoming unstable even if a periodic level variation occurs. A DSP subtracts the output power level of the A/D converter from a reference level to determine the difference between the reference level and the output power level. If the difference is negative, that is, the gain of a variable grain amplifier is to be decreased, the DSP controls the gain of the variable gain amplifier according to a first grain variation width determined on the basis of the difference. Contrarily if the difference is positive, that is, the grain of the variable gain amplifier is to be increased, the DSP controls the gain of the variable gain amplifier according to a second gain variation width smaller than the first gain variation width. Thus, even if the input power level of the variable gain amplifier abruptly increases, the increase of the output power level of the variable gain amplifier can be suppressed.

This invention relates to a method for controlling an amplification within a receiver. The gain of a variable gain amplifier which amplifies an input signal to obtain a gain-controlled signal is set. Said gain controlled signal is analog-to-digital converted. Thereby digital words are generated. Each digital word has a value out of a plurality of possible digital values. Digital words having a value within a first and a second subset of the possible digital values are counted in order to generate a first and a second counter value. The gain is set in accordance with the first and second counter values in a fashion that all counter values are as equal as possible. Furthermore, this invention is related to a circuit to be used within a receiver for adjusting the gain of a variable gain amplifier in order to ensure a proper analog-to-digital conversion.

A plurality of target values for generating a gain control signal are provided such that switching is performed between the target values with a baseband signal processing unit. Specifically, the baseband signal processing unit monitors the state of a received signal to select an appropriate one of the target values based on the monitoring result. The selected target value is compared with a received power amount to generate the gain control signal. When saturation occurs at input ends of A/D converters for digital processing of the received signal, the target value is switched to the next lower target value. Thus, even when the received signal includes an interference wave in addition to a desired wave, saturation at the input ends of the A/D converters due to the interference wave is prevented, thereby making it possible to maintain favorable reception characteristics and suppression of an increased bit error rate in digital communication.

In a method for determining the actual amplitude of signal relative to a predetermined amplitude two samples of the signal are squared to produce two squared samples, and the sum of the two squared samples minus the square of the predetermined amplitude is calculated to produce a difference of squares. A shift operation is performed on the difference of squares to determine a difference between the actual amplitude and the predetermined amplitude. Preferably two consecutive samples of the signal are taken at four times the frequency of the signal. A circuit device includes an A/D converter, a variable gain amplifier, and a feedback loop. The A/D converter converts an analog signal into a digital signal, and the variable gain amplifier adjusts the amplitude of the analog signal. The feedback loop controls the variable gain amplifier based on a difference between the amplitude of the analog signal and a predetermined amplitude and calculates the difference.

The invention aims to minimize the analogue/digital converter over-dimensioning within the framework of reception of signals originating from a satellite and exhibiting power levels which can vary over time. The invention proposes a technique of automatic gain control which handles the setting of the noise level associated with the amplified signal. The automatic gain control is achieved by neutralizing the signal received by the antenna, and by adjusting the gain during the neutralization of the signal received until a predetermined noise level is obtained at the end of the reception facility. The invention also pertains to a device comprising the means for implementing the method.

An automatic gain control method is provided in which, even when an input power level of a received radio signal is increased abruptly, saturation of an analog-to-digital converter is cancelled in a short period of time, and in which control is prevented from becoming unstable even when a periodic variation in power level occurs. A DSP determines a differential value by subtracting a power level of the analog-to-digital converter from a reference level. When the differential value is negative, i.e., when a gain of a variable gain amplifier is to be decreased, the DSP controls the gain of the variable gain amplifier, based on a first magnitude of variation in gain determined based on the differential value. When the differential value is positive, i.e., when the gain of the variable gain amplifier is to be increased, the DSP controls the gain of the variable gain amplifier, based on a second magnitude of variation in gain smaller than the first magnitude of variation in gain. With this, even when the input power level the of variable gain amplifier is increased abruptly, the magnitude of increase in the output power level of the variable gain amplifier is suppressed.
