An image data conversion processing device includes an issue unit (8), plural line storing units (3) and a generating unit (4) for converting to a television signal image data stored in plural kinds of developing formats in a storing unit. The image data comprises plural lines, and the television signal comprises a predetermined number of lines. The issue unit issues a transmission instruction of image data to the storing unit in accordance with a period specified by a ratio of the line number of the image data to be converted and the line number of the television signal. The plural line storing units cyclically stores the image data transmitted from the storing unit line by line on the basis of the transmission instruction of the issue unit. In synchronism with the horizontal synchronizing signal of the television signal, the generating unit multiplies the image data stored in the line storing unit by an interpolative coefficient corresponding to the developing format of the image data to be converted in the plural interpolative coefficients which are beforehand set for the plural kinds of developing formats, thereby generating the television signal. Such a device is capable of automatically generating television signals having desirably good display performance from image data of various different formats held in a Video RAM, without using multiple sets of hardware.

An apparatus simultaneously flicker filters and vertically contracts a plurality of original lines to form compensated lines. The device uses a coefficient calculator (704) and a line processor (700), both controlled by a controller (706). The coefficient calculator provides compensation coefficients to the line processor. The line processor (700) forms weighted sums of the original lines, with the weightings determined by compensation coefficients. The compensation coefficients are chosen to sumultaneously implement flicker filtering and vertical contraction. Thus, the weighted sums are the compensated lines.

A method and apparatus is provided for the conversion of non-interlaced image data to interlaced image data while reducing flicker effects and simultaneously scaling the image data. A programmable discrete time oscillator (DTO) dynamically determines coefficients that are used in reducing flicker and vertical and horizontal scaling. The two functions are integrated which allow the flicker filter coefficient generated by the DTO to dynamically be modified and take into account desired vertical scaling. A similar DTO is provided to separately perform horizontal scaling using the dynamic coefficients.

A flickerless television receiver displays image signals having the horizontal/vertical scanning frequencies thereof increased to two times the horizontal/vertical scanning frequencies of the broadcast signals to be received. Flickerless display performance can be confirmed with a single television receiver by generating signals to extract every other field for image displaying and showing two kinds of image signals, namely double-speed image signal and extracted image signal. A display unit displays double-speed image signals having horizontal and vertical scanning frequencies of image signals increased to two tunes by conversion, wherein extracted image signals formed by extracting every other field or frame from screen images are generated and two kinds of images formed of the double-speed image signals and extracted image signals are simultaneously displayed on one screen.

A video scan converter has a deflickering circuit that attenuates spatial frequency components that combine high vertical spatial frequency with low horizontal spatial frequency. The resulting signal is converted from progressive scanning to interlaced scanning by appropriate selection of even and odd horizontal scanning lines. The deflickering circuit may also expand a selected part of the video signal by vertical interpolation, followed by vertical low-pass filtering, in which case a separate horizontal interpolating circuit expands the selected part horizontally, preferably after progressive-to-interlaced scan conversion.

A pixel generator and method of generating pixel data for creating frames of video pixel data from fields of input video pixel data. The pixel processor 16 includes a field buffer circuit 36 that stores a plurality of fields of input video pixel data. Coupled to the field buffer are a feature detector 38 and a pixel generator 40. The feature detector 38 generates one or more feature magnitude signals based upon one or more of the fields of input video pixel data. The pixel generator 40 has at least two logic circuits for generating at least two different intermediate pixel data values based on the input pixel data. Coupled to feature detector 38 is feature analyzer 42 that selects a feature weight corresponding to each intermediate pixel data value, the weight being based upon the value of the feature magnitude signals. Coupled to feature analyzer 42 and pixel generator 40, is a pixel averager 44 that generates output pixel data based upon a weighted average of the intermediate pixel data values.

Picture display device including a field number conversion circuit provided with a synchronising signal conversion circuit (4) in which the number of half lines in a field of a television signal to be converted is counted by means of a counter (57). This number is passed on to a further counter (41) which counts at a rate which is different from that of the first-mentioned counter. The ratio between the counting rates of the counters is assumed to be equal to the ratio between the field numbers of a converted television signal and the television signal to be converted. Also in the case of possible deviations of the television signal to be converted from a standard signal, the further counter (41) places vertical synchronising signals (V2) at the correct locations in the converted television signal.
