With this configuration, a false contour of a moving picture signal can be attenuated, thereby minimizing a flicker.

An image data conversion processing device includes an issue unit (8), plural line storing units (3) and a generating unit (4) for converting to a television signal image data stored in plural kinds of developing formats in a storing unit. The image data comprises plural lines, and the television signal comprises a predetermined number of lines. The issue unit issues a transmission instruction of image data to the storing unit in accordance with a period specified by a ratio of the line number of the image data to be converted and the line number of the television signal. The plural line storing units cyclically stores the image data transmitted from the storing unit line by line on the basis of the transmission instruction of the issue unit. In synchronism with the horizontal synchronizing signal of the television signal, the generating unit multiplies the image data stored in the line storing unit by an interpolative coefficient corresponding to the developing format of the image data to be converted in the plural interpolative coefficients which are beforehand set for the plural kinds of developing formats, thereby generating the television signal. Such a device is capable of automatically generating television signals having desirably good display performance from image data of various different formats held in a Video RAM, without using multiple sets of hardware.

The present invention provides a method and system for reducing flicker within an interlaced image (fig. 1). The method and system comprises identifying an area of the interlaced image where flicker needs to be reduced (fig. 3) and adaptively adjusting a pattern of pixels derived from a non-interlaced spatial relationship of the interlaced image within the area based upon characteristics of the image (fig. 5). A flicker filter (10) is provided which utilizes an adaptive technique whereby pixel-blending (18) characteristics are constantly changed within the image depending on particular image attributes. It is unique in that high vertical resolution is maintained for detailed image content such as text and most graphics, while flicker is effectively reduced on image content that is flicker prone. The filter (18) is based on psycho-visual studies and simulations performed by the company as well as numerous prior flicker filter implementations. This has achieved the goal to maximize vertical resolution, enhancing text and graphics sharpness while still suppressing noticeable flicker.

A system and method for conversion of graphics from computer graphics formats to television formats are disclosed. More particularly, an improved scaling and flicker reduction system and method are disclosed for scaling personal computer (PC) graphics formats into different resolution television (TV) formats and for reducing flicker due to the conversion process of interlacing non-interlaced PC graphics to match interlaced TV formats. The scaling implementation reduces line buffer requirements by using a conditional scaling technique for converting graphics from a PC resolution format to a TV resolution format. The flicker reduction implementation provides a two-dimensional adaptive filter that selects between multiple filters so that different parts of an image may have different flicker reduction and different levels of trade off between flicker reduction and resolution. The system and method disclosed are more generally applicable to converting images from one resolution to another and to reducing flicker in images converted from a non-interlaced format to an interlaced format.

Plasma Display Panels (PDP) are becoming more and more interesting for TV technology. Due to the larger size of PDPs, with larger viewing angle the large area flicker effect will become more serious in the future, in particular when handling 50Hz video standards. This invention proposes a different sub-field organisation, with different coding, which reduces large area flicker artefact, and which is characterised by:
1. Grouping of sub-fields (SF) in 2 sub-field groups (G1, G2), of similar structure. 2. The 2 sub-field groups (G1, G2) are identical in terms of the most significant sub-fields (SF) and different in terms of the least significant sub-fields (SF). 3. A sub-field coding process that distributes luminance weight symmetrically over the 2 sub-field groups (G1, G2) so as to minimise the 50Hz large area flicker luminance component.

A video signal processing apparatus and method for converting a frame-unit video signal into a field-unit video signal includes a memory (116) for storing the frame-unit video signal, a control circuit (31) for controlling reading of the stored frame-unit video data from the memory so as to obtain the field-unit video signal having fields which are arranged in a desired order and a vertical filter (32) which receives the field-unit video signal read from the memory. The vertical filter shifts a centroid of a picture represented by the received video signal in accordance with at least one coefficient which is selectively set based upon the field order. The reading of the video signal may be controlled so as to operate as a delay device thereby eliminating the need for such delay in the vertical filter. When applied to a digital VTR or the like, the present apparatus prevents line flicker and suppresses plane flicker.
