A system and a method are disclosed for measuring the grip performance of a vehicle (10) through relation to a lumped-sum parameter derived from force and displacement measurements taken from selected elements forming the suspension (30) of the vehicle. For at least one wheel (20, 24) of the vehicle, the magnitude and relative direction of the instantaneous load force vector acting on each support member (48a, b, 54a, b, etc.) thereof are measured. The load force vectors are resolved with respect to a relative plane into a first load force component, a second load force component, and a third load force component normal to said first and second components. The load force components are then related to a common reference plane to derive normalized load force components, which normalized components are then summed to derive normalized first, second and third load force components which correspond to the instantaneous grip force developed between the wheel of the vehicle and the ground surface.

Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es, eine solche Radmeßnabe zu entwickeln, daß präzise die Bestimmung der drei auftretenden Kräfte Fx, Fy und Fz sowie der dazugehörigen Momente Mx, My und Mz in optimaler Weise erreicht werden kann. Dies wird dadurch erreicht, daß die Dehnmeßstreifen derart angeordnet, ausgerichtet und miteinander verschaltet sind, um alle Kräfte und Momente über die bei Belastung auftretende Schubspannungen zu ermitteln.

An method for detecting a friction coefficient (µ) of the road surface according to the present invention comprises a detection step of detecting an operating angle (ϑ H ) of the steering wheel (4) of the vehicle, a vehicle speed (V) and an operating pressure (Δ P) of the hydraulic power steering unit (1) for the front wheels (FW), and a calculation step of calculating the friction coefficient of the road surface on turning of the vehicle by considering relationships among a slip angle (ß f) of the front wheel, the friction coefficient of the road surface and a cornering force (C F ) of the front wheels. The method according to the present invention further includes a step of prohibiting the execution of the calculation step when the steering wheel is turned back, whereby the calculation step is executed only when the direction of the operating pressure of the power steering unit is in the equiphase with the operating direction of the steering wheel. Also, the four-wheel steering system according to the present invention has a rear steering actuator (11) for steering the rear wheels (RW) so as to increase the steering angle of the rear wheels as the friction coefficient of the road surface calculated by the above-described method decreases.
