A medium access apparatus having low power consumption includes a head driving section (54), an access section (26), a power supply section (27, 28) and a control signal generating section (58). When a medium (46) is rotated, the head driving section (54) causes a head (21-1) to seek a destination track on the medium (46) in accordance with an input drive signal including step pulses, the number of step pulses corresponding to a number of tracks from a current track, where the head (21-1) positions, to the destination track. The access section (26) accesses the medium (46) through the head (21-1) when power is supplied to the access section (26). The power supply section (27, 28) supplies the power to the access section (26) and stopping the supply of the power in accordance with an input switch control signal. The control signal generating section (58) selectively generates and outputs the switch control signal to the power supply section (27, 28) in accordance with the number of step pulses of the drive signal.

A data transfer apparatus is disclosed as typified by a floppy disk drive which, together with one or more like devices, is daisy chained to host equipment comprising a central processor unit and an associated controller. Each disk drive comprises a disk motor (20) for rotating a record disk (18) unter the control of a disk motor drive circuit (46), a head motor (26) for incrementally moving a transducer head (22) radially of the record disk under the control of a head motor drive circuit (52), and a read/write circuit (64) for processing data read from, or to be written on, the record disk via the transducer head (22). The host equipment produces, among other control signals, a MOTOR ON signal for the on/off control of the disk motor via the disk motor drive circuit (46). In order to avoid waste of electric power, not only the disk motor drive circuit (46) but also at least either, preverably both, of the head motor drive circuit (52) and the read/wirte circuit (64) is connected to a common power line via a power control switch (100) which is closed only when the MOTOR ON signal is in a prescribed state to cause rotation of the disk motor.

A data recorder system in the form of an optical disk recorder in which the optical disk (4), the drive spindle (6) and the disk drive motor (8) are moved or pivoted in an arcuate path relative to stationary laser optics (10). When moved in such an arcuate path, the optical disk (4), spindle (6) and drive motor (8) have a lessened movement of inertia (compared to linear movement thereof! which permits relatively fast accessing of an optical disk without a large drive motor. The accessing system can be naturally statically balanced by placing the spindle (6) and the drive motor (8) on opposite sides of the pivot point.
