摘要:
The present invention relates to a method of recovering energy from the turntable motor (12) in an optical disc drive comprising a power supply and a circuitry (10) that is capable of selectively feeding a current from the power supply into the motor in a first state and from the motor into the power supply in a second state, the method comprising the steps of: decelerating the motor, during decelerating the motor, repeatedly calculating a ratio between a duration of the first state and a duration of the second state in dependence on an angular velocity of the motor, such that a current integrated over the whole decelerating process is fed from the motor into the power supply, and after calculating the ratio, selecting the duration of the first state and the duration of the second state in accordance with the calculated ratio. The present invention further relates to an optical device.

The invention provides apparatus and a method for use in a storage system for braking a storage disk (12) driven by a spindle drive motor (16) with a coil (20A, 20B, 20C). The invention includes trigger means (34, 38) for detecting the back EMF generated in the coil when there is a loss of power and for actuating means (48 to 52, 94 to 98, 132) for electrically shorting the coil when the back EMF falls below a pre-determined level. This level is selected to be large enough so that the rate of rotation of the magnetic disk is sufficient for a magnetic head of the system to "fly" over the surface of the disk, but small enough so that surge currents in the drive spindle motor will not damage the coil.

In a disk drive, a synchronized chopping scheme is described for deriving high peak currents from a coasting spindle motor under pwer down conditions to supply power to other circuits. These circuits need to perform certain functions to avoid physical damage to the data storage area as well as the read/write head. The maximum current that can be delivered by the back-emf (BEMF) in the spindle motor is limited by the motor parameters and the circuit elements. By synchronised out-of-phase chopping of the connections between a driving circuit and the spindle and head positioning motors, a storage capacitor in the driving circuit can be made much smaller, and the unused power dissipated as heat in a clamp circuit is minimized. This is achieved by directly transferring the energy from the spindle to the necessary circuits with synchronized control of the spindle and the circuits that need to operate under no power condition.

For braking a disk drive when a power fault occurs, a circuit (10) produces an output signal (28) indicating that the motor of the disk drive has slowed at least to a predetermined rotational speed after the occurrence of the power fault. Components of the circuit (10) may be integrated onto the same integrated circuit as the motor driving circuitry or head retract circuitry. During the time between the occurrence of the power fault and the time the disk drive has slowed to the predetermined rotational speed, the read/write head mechanism (17) is retracted. A braking circuit then brakes the disk drive when the output signal (28) indicates that the motor has slowed at least to the predetermined rotational speed. The circuit for producing an output signal indicating that the motor has slowed at least to the predetermined rotational speed is actuated by the back-emf (14) generated by the motor falling below a predetermined level.
