A limiting feature in spacecraft such as communication satellites is becoming the amount of surface (5,6) available for dissipating waste heat from the electrical equipment in the satellite. The invention provides a deployable radiator (11) which carries a number of capillary pumped loops consisting of an evaporator, an outward limb and a return limb. The panel (11) is rolled up to coil the elements prior to launch, and unrolled when in orbit. The outward and return lengths of tube act as condenser for the capillary pumped loop, transport the heat over the radiating panel (11) and also provide the spring force for the panel to unroll.

Switching means of a satellite has a first set of switches for receiving respective channel slots of de-multiplexed narrow band channels. The set of switches may be made up of four position switches 5 1 , 5 2 etc. Switch 5 2 may be connected straight through, or to the straight through positions of switches 5 1 and or 5 3 via interswitch connections. The same is possible with the second set of switches 6. A wide selection of the possible frequency slots is possible (for example eight out of sixteen) to allow routing among the amplifiers 9, 10, some of which are designated as redundant.

A spacecraft has, in addition to redundant thrusters T3, T4 prime thrusters T1 or T2 arranged to be operated one at a time which are supplied with propellant 1 via valves V1 and V2. The thrusters are of the kind in which energy is transferred to the propellant by employing electrodes which create a current flow path through the propellant gas. A single power supply PSU1 provides power to several electrically-powered thrusters. It is connected such that when actuated all the thrusters to which it is connected become charged. However, only the thruster which receives propellant is able to carry current as the propellant forms part of the current carrying circuit, and this thruster therefore draws power. This technique allows the use of a single power supply for several thrusters whilst eliminating or minimising the necessity to switch power from one thruster to another.

A multi-port microwave coupler has six input ports In 1, In 2, In 3, In 4, In 5 and In 6 and six output ports Out 1, Out 2, Out 3, Out 4, Out 5 and Out 6 and is synthesised from nine 2 x 2 90° hybrid couplers which are arranged as three sets, that is a first set A, B and C, a second set D, E and F and a third set G, H and I. A first group of transmission lines 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 interconnect the first and second sets of hybrid couplers, and a second group of transmission lines 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 interconnect the second and third sets of hybrid couplers. The first and third sets of couplers each give a 3dB power reduction, but the second set give a 1:2 power split between their outputs. Three 90° phase shift devices X, Y and Z correct the phase of the signals in the transmission lines 21, 25 and 24 respectively. When equal amplitude signals are applied to all of the input ports, the combined signal can be directed to any one of the output ports by appropriately selecting the respective phases of the input signals. The first and second groups of transmission lines can be arranged as respective transmission rings so that all cross-overs in the transmission lines are avoided thereby providing a planar realisation of a 6 x 6 multi-port microwave coupler. The invention is of application to higher order n x n multi-port microwave couplers where n = 2 p x 2 q with both p and q as whole numbers.

Apparatus for and a method of digital signal processing utilises a technique known as sub-band decomposition and reconstruction. A plurality of input channels are provided each of which is mixed with a vernier frequency correction. In a multiplexer implementation, an FFT weighted overlap-add demultiplexer (c) is provided for decomposing each input channel into sub-bands. The sub-band outputs are decimated by a factor (d) to the common input sampling rate of a multiplexer, the sub-bands from each channel then being passed into the appropriate ports of an FFT weighted overlap-add multiplexer (f) by means of a switch matrix (e). The multiplexer (f) reconstructs the individual channels, interpolates each channel up to the output sampling rate of the FDT signal, mixes each channel up to its assigned carrier frequency in the FDM and multiplexes the channels. This provides a computationally efficient architecture with the flexibility to accommodate channels of differing bandwidths.
