The frequency division multiplexed coupler (401) further comprises a second modulating unit (622) for modulating a frequency of a second outgoing signal to a second modulated signal having a frequency range corresponding to a second carrier signal (602). A frequency multiplexer (635) is coupled to the first modulating unit (621) and the second modulating unit (622) for multiplexing the first modulated signal and the second modulated signal onto a single telephone wire (636) for transmission to a remote site.

A physically compact, multichannel wireless communication transceiver architecture employs overlap and add or polyphase signal processing functionality, previously applied to narrowband speech analysis research, for wideband signal processing. A receiver section receives a plurality of multiple frequency communication channels and outputs digital signals representative of the contents of the plurality of multiple frequency communication channels. The receiver section contains an FFT-based channelizer that processes the digital signals output by a wideband digital receiver and couples respective channel outputs to a first plurality of digital signal processor units, which process (e.g. demodulate) respective ones of the digital channel signals and supply processed ones of the digital channel signals at respective output ports for distribution to an attendant voice/data network. On the transmit side, a transmit section contains a plurality of digital signal processors, respectively associated with respective ones of a plurality of incoming (voice/data) communication signals to be transmitted over respectively different frequency channels. Their processed (modulated, encoded) outputs are supplied to an inverse FFT combiner. The FFT combiner supplies a combined multichannel signal to a wideband transmitter which transmits a multiple frequency communication channel signal. Each of the channelizer and combiner may be implemented using overlap and add or polyphase filtering.

A digital signal processing apparatus for frequency multiplexing and demultiplexing of narrow band FDM signals has a first block fine processing stage (11) connected in series to a first block coarse processing stage (16, 17) and in parallel therewith a second block fine processing stage (11a) connected in series to a second block coarse processing stage (16, 17). The two stages 11 and 11a are coupled together at one side remote from the two coarse processing stages (16, 17) to provide a first port (14) and the stages (16 and 17) at the side remote from the port (14) provide a plurality of ports (15). Each stage (11, 11a) is a FIR lowpass filter and each stage (16, 17) incorporates a polyphase filter (16) in connection with a Fast Fourier Transform Unit (17).

Einsatz in einem Rundfunk und Fernsehverteilsystem, insbesondere über Glasfaser. Erlaubt hohe Kanalzahl bei extrem hohen Abtastfrequenzen am Ausgang.

Apparatus for and a method of digital signal processing utilises a technique known as sub-band decomposition and reconstruction. A plurality of input channels are provided each of which is mixed with a vernier frequency correction. In a multiplexer implementation, an FFT weighted overlap-add demultiplexer (c) is provided for decomposing each input channel into sub-bands. The sub-band outputs are decimated by a factor (d) to the common input sampling rate of a multiplexer, the sub-bands from each channel then being passed into the appropriate ports of an FFT weighted overlap-add multiplexer (f) by means of a switch matrix (e). The multiplexer (f) reconstructs the individual channels, interpolates each channel up to the output sampling rate of the FDT signal, mixes each channel up to its assigned carrier frequency in the FDM and multiplexes the channels. This provides a computationally efficient architecture with the flexibility to accommodate channels of differing bandwidths.

An N-channel FDM signal is converted into complex signals of baseband frequencies (1-6) spaced at intervals equal to frequency Δf. The complex baseband signals are converted first into digital samples (7-9)having a frequency NΔf and then into N parallel digital signals (11). A plurality of first FIR subfilters (17-1 through 17-N) respectively perform filtering on each of the parallel digital signals at frequency Δf to produce a first series of filtered digital signals from each of the first FIR subfilters, and (m - 1) groups of second FIR subfilters respectively perform filtering on each of the parallel digital signals at frequency Δf to produce a second series of filtered digital samples from each of the second FIR subfilters at timing displaced with respect to the first series by a/mΔf, where is an integer ranging from unity to (m - 1) and m is an integer equal to or greater than 2. Outputs of the first FIR subfilters are combined with outputs of the second FIR subfilters to produce N summation outputs at frequency mΔf. An N-point Fast Fourier Transform processor (14) performs fast Fourier transform on the N summation outputs at frequency mΔf to derive digital channels. Because of the oversampling at frequency mΔf, each of the digital channels has a frequency response which can be made flat over the bandwidth Δf.

A transmitter includes a combiner (102) for combining plural data signal sets (I1, Q1; I2, Q2) into a single set of data signals (I', Q'). An I/Q modulator (106) modulates the single sets of data signals onto for example an intermediate frequency (IF) carrier signal. A frequency upconverter converts the frequency of the IF signal to a radio frequency signal which, when amplified in a power amplifier, is transmitted via antenna. Using the present invention, plural sets of quadrature modulated signals separated in frequency are transmitted on a single RF carrier rather than on two carriers.
