The bulking layer (1) is adapted to cooperate with the fabric layers (15, 15') to vary the gap therebetween upon departure in a desired direction of the textile temperature from a predetermined temperature.

摘要: A method of manufacture is described for composite materials having a matrix produced via a consolidated powder process and incorporating aligned short fibre reinforcement. The method involves feeding a paste of powdered matrix material into a twin roller mill (2, 4) having a first roller (4) with a speed of rotation greater than a second roller (2), so that during rolling the paste forms into a sheet of matrix material (9) around the first roller; feeding one or more lengths of reinforcing fibre (10) into the nip (6) between the rollers; and subjecting the fibre and matrix mixture to a unidirectional rolling so that the fibre is broken up into an array of short fibres within the sheet and continuing rolling to such an extent that the array of short fibres becomes substantially aligned. The sheet of fibre containing green composite may then be removed from the first roller.

摘要: A thermal imaging system (10) which is accoupled and operates by scanning recreates a thermal image by superimposing measured variations in infrared emission from a scene (22) onto a reference level supplied by a light emitting diode (28). The diode (28) is both a positive and negative luminescent emitter; emitted flux is current controlled to be equivalent to black body radiation at a range of temperatures which may be colder or hotter than ambient. A signal generated when the system (10) switches between scene and diode observation is a measure of the difference between the mean scene temperature and the diode effective temperature. In response to this digital, control means adjust the bias current through the diode (28) in order to reduce the temperature difference. The reference temperature converges towards the mean scene temperature as this process is repeated. Absolute temperature is thus restored and some image defects removed.

摘要: A dynamic infrared scene projector for use infrared detections systems which has particular, although not exclusive, use in thermal imaging or seeker systems. In such systems, a dynamic infrared scene projector is used to simulate the thermal scene for testing and calibration purposes. The device comprises an array of electroluminescent semiconductor diode structures, capable of emitting both positive and negative luminescence, and electronic circuitry for supplying currents of both polarity to each diode independently so that the emission of positive and negative luminescence can be controlled. The diode structures in the array are based on narrow bandegap semiconductor materials, for example, the Hg1-xCdxTe, In1-xAlxSb, Hg1-xZnxTe or In1-xTlxSb materials systems (where x is the composition). In a preferred embodiment, the diodes are capable of emitting infrared radiation in the wavelength regions between 3-5 νm or 8-13 νm. By utilizing the negative luminescence properties of the diode structures, the dynamic infrared scene projector can simulate a wide range of temperatures, and in particular low temperatures, without external cryogenic cooling. The dynamic infrared scene projector also permits the use of faster thermal imager frame rates than are achievable with existing systems.

摘要: An electroluminescent device (10) comprises a porous silicon region (22) adjacent a bulk silicon region (20), together with a top electrical contact (24) of transparent indium tin oxide and a bottom electrical contact (26) of aluminium. The device includes a heavily doped region (28) to provide an ohmic contact. The porous silicon region (22) is fabricated by anodizing through an ion-implanted surface layer of the bulk silicon. The silicon remains unannealed between the ion-implantation and anodization stages. The device (10) has a rectifying p-n junction within the porous silicon region (22).

摘要: A method and apparatus for monitoring a gaseous environment for the presence of cellular material; more particularly an apparatus and method that is capable of providing a measure of presence and/or numbers of cellular microorganisms, such as bacterial cells, in a large volume of air such as in a warehouse or production facility or in an open air location where bacterial presence is suspected. The method and apparatus of the invention are particularly provided for determining the likelihood of pathogenic material being present in an environment by batch or on-line measurement of cell numbers. In the latter format, a continuous monitoring of an environment for presence of pathogens is effected. The apparatus comprises a continuous flow luminometer preferably fed by a cyclone or high velocity virtual impactor and lytic and luminescence reagents which detect the amount of ATP or adenylate kinase present in a sample of air.
