An adhesive polymer comprising a maleic anhydride grafted butyl rubber and a polymer compound made from the adhesive polymer further comprising a functionalized siliceous nanoclay. The adhesive polymer and polymer compound exhibit greatly improved adhesion to certain substrate surfaces. Examples of substrate materials include stainless steel, glass, mylar or Teflon®. The greatest adhesion was observed in polymer compounds comprising maleic anhydride grafted butyl rubber produced according to a solution process and from 5 to 15 phr of a montmorillonite nanoclay. The adhesion is improved with increasing levels of nanoclay content in the compound up to a limit where filler-filler interactions occur.

A co-polymer of isobutene and 4-bromo-3-methyl-1-butene formed by direct copolymerization in a single-step process. A continuous process for forming the co-polymer preferably comprises periodic or semi-continuous addition of catalyst to a mixed monomer solution. Semi-continuous reverse addition of the mixed monomer solution to a pre-provided catalyst solution may also be employed. The co-polymer exhibits allylic bromide functionality and is advantageously curable by either ZnO curing systems or sulfur-based curing systems.

A butyl rubber ionomer having improved adhesion to substrates whose surfaces have polar functional groups. Examples of such substrate materials include stainless steel, glass, mylar or Teflon®. The adhesion of the butyl rubber ionomer to the substrate is at least 25% greater than the adhesion of a non-ionomeric butyl rubber to the same substrate surface and with certain substrates is more than 150% greater. The adhesion is improved with increasing levels of multiolefin content in the butyl rubber ionomer. The adhesion is greatest for butyl rubber ionomers having a high multiolefin content (at least 3.5 mol% of multiolefin monomers or at least 1.5 mol % of residual multiolefins). By taking advantage of these high adhesion levels, a composite article can be formed between the butyl rubber ionomer and the substrate.

The present invention provides a process for preparing a filled halobutyl elastomer which comprises mixing a halobutyl elastomer, mineral filler and an oligomeric polyol compound or mixture of an oligomeric polyol compound and an additive containing at least one hydroxyl group and at least one functional group having a basic amine group, and curing the resulting filled elastomer mixture. The invention also relates to a filled elastomer composition prepared by said process having improved scorch safety.

Nitrile rubber polymers, optionally hydrogenated, having lower molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution than those known in the art, are prepared by metathesis of nitrile butadiene rubber, optionally followed by hydrogenation. The process comprises the steps of a) reacting a nitrile rubber in the presence of at least one compound which is a ruthenium or osmium based indenylidene complex and optionally b) hydrogenating the resulting lower molecular weight nitrile rubber using standard techniques known in the art. The optionally hydrogenated nitrile rubber, with lower molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution has very good heat resistance, excellent ozone and chemical resistance and excellent oil resistance. It is used in automotive, oil, electrical, mechanical engineering and shipbuilding industries.

A peroxide cured rubber composition comprising a first peroxide curable rubber compound comprising a hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber compound (HNBR); a second peroxide curable rubber compound comprising repeating units derived from at least one isoolefin monomer, more than 3.0 mol% of repeating units derived from at least one multiolefin monomer, and a gel content of less than 5.0 wt%; and, repeating units derived from at least one multiolefin cross-linking agent. In a preferred embodiment, the second peroxide curable rubber comprises a peroxide curable butyl rubber (IIR) with a high isoprene content and a low gel content. The composition is particularly useful in the making of hydrocarbon resistant seals. A method of producing the composition is also disclosed, along with a shaped article made from the composition.
