Acrylate, or methacrylate, or allylic, functionalized polyfluorooxetanes are disclosed for use in radiation curable coating compositions. These acrylate, or methacrylate, or allylic, functionalized polymers provide improvements in wetting and surface properties that have previously been provided by migratory chemicals such as waxes and oils. The partially or fully fluorinated side groups of the fluorooxetanes are believed to be disporportionately present at the interfaces between the coating and the substrate and between the coating and the atmosphere.

The present invention is a process for producing an injection-molded thermoplastic workpiece having a thermoset coating bonded thereto, comprising the steps of introducing in three stages into a closed mold a thermoplastic material, such as a polyolefin, heated to a temperature above its melting point and molding said material to form o workpiece; cooling the workpiece to a temperature less than its melt temperature introducing a thermoset coating composition into the closed mold to cover at least a portion of a surface of the workpiece. The mold is then opened and the workpiece is removed after the coating composition has at least partially cured. The invention is also directed to a molded article made by the described process.

Anionic waterborne polyurethane dispersions are formed in the presence of polyfluorooxetane oligomers, polymers, or copolymers so that the polyfluorooxetanes are incorporated in the polyurethane. Coatings made from such polyurethanes have good low temperature flexibility, good chemical resistance, stain resistance, and abrasion resistance, as well as a low coefficient of friction. Alternatively, the anionic water borne polyurethane dispersion can be blended with vinyl ester monomers such as various acrylates and subsequently polymerized by radiation, for example ultraviolet light, to form a comingled blend of at least two different types of polymers. Another embodiment relates to a preformed copolymer made by reacting the polyfluorooxetane oligomer, polymer, or copolymer with a polycarboxylic acid such as a dicarboxylic acid and subsequently reacting the same with a polyol intermediate, such as a polymer, or with monomers forming the polyol intermediate.

Monofunctional polyfluorooxetan oligomers, polymers, and copolymers are prepared by the cationic polymerization of fluorooxeteane monomers with a monoalcohol. In addition to serving as an initiator, the monoalcohol can also serve as a solvent for the fluorooxetan or other monomers to produce oligomers, polymers, or copolymers having low cyclic content. Suitable comonomers generally include various cyclic ethers. The polyfluorooxetan oligomer, polymer, or copolymer having a single hydroxyl end group can be functionalized with a variety of compounds so as to yield a functional end group such as an acrylate, a methacrylate, an allylic, an amine, etc., with the functionalized oligomer or polymer being suitable for use in radiation curable or thermal curable coating compositions. These functionalized polymers can be copolymerized and cured to provide improvements in wetting and surface properties.

A polyvinyl alcohol copolymer latex composition comprises an intimate polymer composition obtained from 10% to 60% by weight of a substantially hydrolyzed low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH); 2% to 80% by weight of at least one diene; 2% to 80% by weight of at least one hydrophobic monomer other than a diene and optionally either up to 10% by weight of at least one hydrophilic ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer or up to 40% by weight of a cationic monomer. The copolymer latex composition can be prepared as an emulsion from an aqueous blend of the above listed monomers which are generally added at various stages during the polymerization and a free radical initiator, surfactants, and, if desirable, chain transfer agents. Up to 80% of the PVOH may be added after the monomers have been polymerized.
