The fluid is heated by contact with the PTC piles (12) and the distributor plates (70,80) as it passes through the first (37), second (66) and third (64) flow paths. A weir maintains a fluid level in the module to ensure that the PTC pills (12) are always covered by fluid. A dam splits the flow and directs it toward the PTC pills (12) after which the flow recombines.

The concentrate solution is returned to a concentrate tank for continuous circulation through the apparatus. The retaining channel (54, 154) is defined by a retaining lip (52, 52'/86, 156) and axially spaced shoulder (58, 158) connected by a side wall (56, 159). In an illustrated embodiment (110), the retaining lip (156) includes a plurality of angularly spaced axial slots (165) and the side wall (159) includes ramplike projections (167) which mate with correspondingly shaped tabs (170) projecting from the cartridge (112).
