The method for producing a modified conjugated diene based (co)polymer, according to the present invention comprises a step (a) for obtaining a primarily modified polymer by conducting a primary modification reaction wherein at least one member selected from the group consisting of an alkoxysilane compound and a silanol compound is introduced into the active alkali metal terminal of a conjugated diene based (co)polymer having an active alkali metal terminal, and a step (b) for obtaining a secondarily modified polymer (a modified conjugated diene based (co)polymer) by subjecting the above-obtained primarily modified polymer to reactions including the following step (b1) and step (b2), and can produce a conjugated diene based (co)polymer having a high Mooney viscosity and excellent shape stability. Step (a): a reaction with a condensation accelerator containing a metal element. Step (b): a reaction with at least one member selected from the group consisting of inorganic acids and metal halides.

Rubber particles, to be used as fillers or extenders for various composite polymer systems, are chlorinated by a gas-solid phase reaction with a chlorine-containing gas. A composite polymer containing the chlorinated rubber fillers or extenders exhibits a higher flexural modulus than if prepared using an unchlorinated rubber filler or extender. Chlorination of the rubber particles is carried out by contacting the finely divided rubber particles with a chlorine-containing gas comprising at least about 5 volume percent chlorine. Advantageously, the chlorine can be diluted with air, nitrogen or other essentially inert gases and may contain minor amounts of fluorine. Improved performance is obtained with nitrogen dilution of the chlorine gas over air dilution. Improved polymer composite systems having higher flexural modulus result from the use of the chlorinated rubber particles as fillers instead of unchlorinated rubber particles.

A process for producing a chlorinated rubber which comprises chlorinating a latex or aqueous dispersion of a rubber to prepare a chlorinated rubber cake which weakly to highly acidic, drying the cake by fluidized drying together with a drying medium, and successively drying the resultant predried powder by fluidized drying. Thus, a high-quality chlorinated rubber can be efficiently obtained from the chlorinated rubber cake while attaining satisfactory handleability.

In a process for the continuous halogenation of polymers by contacting polymer and halogenating agent in a continuous flow device in which the polymer and halogenating agent are subjected to deformation during reaction and in which means are provided for disengaging reaction by-products and unreacted halogenating agent from the reaction mixture, a significant process improvement is realized by injecting an inert and/or reactive gas into the halogenated polymers immediately after reaction in order to neutralize the product. In a preferred embodiment the process is carried out in an extruder-reactor and an optional, supplementary inert and/or reactive gas scrubbing zone is included. The process is amenable to saturated and unsaturated polymers.

Continuous halogenation of polymers is achieved in an extruder-reactor employing reactants, conditions and design features directed to maximizing mixing and contact of the polymer with the halogenating agent and neutralizing agent while simultaneously minimizing side reactions and polymer degradation. The polymer passes through three extruder-reactor zones under controlled conditions to achieve halogenation: feed, reaction, neutralization, and optionally a wash and exit zone. Various halogenated polymers are produced, for example, halogenated linear low density polyethylene and halogenated butyl rubber.
