Non-contact type wave signal observation apparatus takes measurements of electromagnetic waves received on an observation plane and performs hologram reconstruction calculations to reconstruct characteristics of the corresponding electromagnetic wave information at points in the observed space. A first aspect of the invention provides apparatus for measuring transfer functions (and, if desired, waveforms) at any point on a network containing a transmission line having distributed properties but no internal signal sources. A second aspect of the invention provides apparatus for measuring transfer functions (and, if desired, waveforms) at any point on a network containing a transmission line having distributed properties and having internal signal sources - the processing takes into account fluctuations occurring in the electromagnetic radiation given off by the network. A third aspect of the invention provides apparatus for analysis of spatial electromagnetic waves so as to determine properties such as those related to polarization of the radiation, one or more pairs of mutually orthogonal antennas having figure-of-eight beam patterns are used in the observation plane. A fourth aspect of the invention provides holographic radar apparatus in which the high frequency radiation illuminating the observation space is pulse modulated and the holographic reconstruction calculations are simplified. A fifth aspect of the invention provides a display for displaying complex three-dimensional data such as interference data of electromagnetic waves produced by the apparatus according to the other aspects of the invention. The complex data is converted from orthogonal co-ordinates to polar co-ordinates, the phase information is converted to hue information in a hue converter and the amplitude information is used to modulate the brightness of the displayed signal; corresponding colour signals are displayed on a colour display unit.

In one example, a method includes generating, by a computing device that comprises one or more processors (122) and is onboard a vehicle (100), a radar control output for an aircraft weather radar system (104) to generate a radar transmission tuned to detect birds and bats. The method further includes receiving, by the computing device, radar data in response to the radar transmission. The method further includes determining, by the computing device, whether the radar data comprises data indicative of detected birds or bats. The reliability index may indicate a degree of confidence of the accuracy of the weather information. For example, a system may determine a weather product for each of one or more voxels of a plurality of voxels in a three-dimensional or four-dimensional volumetric buffer, and based on a combination of the weather product and the weather information, determine a reliability index for the weather product. The system may display a first visual representation of the weather product and a second visual representation of the corresponding reliability index.

A convective weather graphic element generator system generates graphic elements associated with severe convective weather for presentation on a display on an aircraft. An exemplary system employs a weather radar and a processing system. The processing system determines a value associated with the detected convective weather based on the received weather radar returns detected by the weather radar, compares the value associated with the detected convective weather with a threshold, and generates a graphic element for a region of airspace when the value associated with the detected convective weather exceeds the threshold. The display is configured to concurrently present the weather reflectivity information generated by the weather radar and the graphic element associated with the convective weather, wherein portions of both the presented graphic element and the presented weather reflectivity information of the corresponding area are concurrently visible on the display.

According to the invention a radar system covering a target area to be monitored such as an airport, seaport or river port, generates radar images in the approach phase. Said radar images show the target area to be monitored as an image taken from the position of the approaching radar system. Over the radar images of the target area being approached generated by means of the radar system during the approach phase optical images of the same target area are superimposed at repeated intervals by means of an on-board data processing system. The combination images of the target area obtained by superimposing radar images and optical images are represented continuously. In addition, by means of the on-board data processing system optical images, possibly including colour images, of the target area to be monitored and stored in the data-processing system are at predefined intervals placed as background to radar images the dimensions of which have been adjusted in line with those of the optical images.
