An apparatus and method for enhanced calibration of radar at the module level supports dual polarization and array calibration and alignment without the use of external test equipment. Utilizing a delay line, loop back capability at the module level allows existing receiver exciter subsystem to be used for calibration. This approach eliminates the need for manual array calibration using external RF monitor subsystem or external test antennas.

The modulator/demodulator subsystem may include a radar module that is selectively coupled to the shared phased array antenna subsystem for transmitting and receiving radar signals. The radar module is configured to transmit and receive radar signals through the shared phased array antenna subsystem. The modulator/demodulator subsystem may also include a communications module that is selectively coupled to the shared phased array antenna subsystem for transmitting and receiving communications signals. The communications module is configured to transmit and receive communications signals through the shared phased array antenna subsystem.

Heterogeneous antenna arrays as disclosed herein can efficiently cover a broad range of frequencies without loss of optimality at higher frequencies. Also disclosed are methods of frequency-domain oriented image reconstruction which are suitable for use with heterogeneous antenna arrays.
