A back-lit colour display is disclosed, in which light from a backlight is filtered by a reflective filter structure arranged on a viewing side of the backlight. The reflective filter structure defines pixels having sub-pixels of red, green and blue colour. According to the invention, the filter structure comprises reflective regions having reflection bands that jointly cover the complete visible range of the spectrum, such that no gaps are present between the reflection bands. Preferably, the emission from the backlight is narrow band, and selected in such a way that the peak emission wavelength is within the corresponding reflection band, but close to the short wavelength cut-off thereof. Furthermore, the emission from the backlight is preferably selected to have a suitable overlap with the tri-stimulus functions of the human eye.

The liquid crystal cell holds a liquid crystal between two transparent substrates each provided with an electrode on the opposite inner surface thereof. The absorption polarizer is a polarizing sheet absorbing a linearly polarized light having a plane of vibration perpendicular to the axis of easy transmission, whereas the reflection polarizer is a polarizing sheet reflecting the linearly polarized light. A reflector or a color filter is preferably disposed under the reflection polarizer, and a light diffusion layer or a light diffusion plate is preferably disposed on the viewed side of the absorption polarizer.

In the display, a light source is used to illuminate a panel which modulates light in order to form an image. Positioned between the light source and the panel is the PSSE element which acts to effectively separate light of different polarizations. The PSSE element provides a means for recapturing light energy which would otherwise be lost in the display, while reducing degradation and heat build-up due to light absorption.

A number of configurations are possible, such as with the compensator (260) disposed in the optical path between the liquid crystal device (210) and the wire grid polarization beamsplitter (240) and with a secondary compensator (265) disposed between wire grid polarization analyzer (270) and the wire grid polarization beamsplitter (240).
