    摘要: A reflective polarizer and a dichroic polarizer are combined to provide an improved optical polarizer. The dichroic and reflective polarizers are typically in close proximity to each other, and are preferably bonded together to eliminate the air gap between the polarizers. The combination of the two polarizers provides a high reflectivity of one polarization and high transmission for the perpendicular polarization from the reflective polarizer side of the combined polarizer, and high absorption and transmission for light of orthogonal polarization from the dichroic polarizer side. The combination also reduces iridescence as seen in transmission and when viewed in reflection from the dichroic polarizer side. The increased extinction ratio and low reflectivity of the optical polarizer allows use of a lower extinction ratio dichroic polarizer in applications requiring a given extinction ratio and high transmission.

The second polarizing plate, the circular polarization phase plate, the cholesteric liquid crystal polymer sheet, the semitransparent light absorbing member, and the backlight are arranged on the opposite side to the viewed side in order of mention. When the backlight is operated, the time display or calender display is possible even at night. Further, colorful metallic display is possible.

    摘要: To provide an electronic timepiece which provides a bright and easy-to-read display, and a greater variety of display forms of numerical information, or the like, and a greater variety of background colours. An electronic timepiece including a polariser 11, a liquid crystal panel 8, and a polarised light separating film 12. The polarised light separating film 12 transmits a linearly polarised light component oriented in a certain direction (arrow Q) and reflects all other linearly polarised light components (arrow P). The internal structure of the polarised light separating film 12 is divided, in a plane, into polarised light separating portions 12a, 12b, and 12c which reflect light of different wavelengths. The polarised light separating film 12 reflects different colours in correspondence to the polarised light separating portions 12a to 12c. Using a reflecting-type polarised light separating film 12 allows a bright display to be realised, and providing a plurality of polarised light separating portions allows a greater variety of display forms to be realised.

The liquid crystal display can easily improve color temperature at a white display in an in-plane direction without accompanied by the increase of the consumed electric power and lowering an in-plane luminance, or can easily improve the in-plane luminance without accompanied by the increase of the consumed electric power and the change of the color temperature in the white display at the in-plane direction.
