An optical path deflecting element (2) is provided between the spatial light modulation element (1) and the image formed on a screen (4) so as to deflect an optical path in accordance with a screen frame period. The optical path deflecting element (2) shifts the optical path for the image projected on the screen (4) at a high rate so as to apparently increase a number of picture elements. The optical path deflecting element (2) is located within the projection optical system.

The meniscus lens comprising a lamp side surface having a first radius of curvature less than infinity for optically interacting with the focussed light beam when the a lamp side surface is longitudinally aligned with a light emitting aperture of the lamp. The lamp side surface triggers optical adjustment of a cone angle of at least a high cone angle portion of the focussed light beam to a smaller cone angle. The lens further comprises an integrator side surface having a second radius of curvature smaller than the first radius of curvature for enabling exit of the focussed light beam from the meniscus lens with an effective cone angle smaller than the given cone angle.

The present invention relates to a projection device comprising a body (1) with a projection opening (2) for light projection. The body (1) encloses at least a light source (7), a scanning unit (8) and a deflection unit (3). The deflection unit (3) is mounted movable between an extended position and a non extended position. The scanning unit (8) is arranged and designed to scan a deflection area of the deflection unit (3) in the extended position with a light beam emitted by the light source (7). In the extended position part of the deflection unit (3) extends through the projection opening (2) to prevent a human eye to come too close to the projection opening (2). In the extended position the deflection unit (3) deflects the light beam from the scanning unit (8) towards a projection area. In the non extended position the deflection unit (3) does not deflect the light beam from the scanning unit (8) through the projection opening (2). With the proposed projection device the human eye is protected to come too close to the projection opening (2) during normal operation of the projection device.

At least an electro-optical device, a color synthesizing means and a projection lens are disposed along the xy plane and in such a way that the center of an image beam emitted from a color synthesizing optical system is incident onto the first mirror in parallel to the xy plane and at a deg. to the y axis. A second mirror is disposed almost vertical to the xz plane and at about 45 deg. minus a/2 to the yz plane so that an image beam as light reflected from the first mirror is reflected again off the second mirror with the center of the image beam shone almost vertically onto the center of the screen. Accordingly, the positional adjustment of the optical system constituting the projector is facilitated and the entire apparatus is downsized.
