The invention relates to the production of screw pump rotors comprising a pitch and/or depth of teeth which can be modified along the axis of the rotor. By means of a simple profiled machine tool (7), a first part of the profiled flank contour is clearly defined along the rotor axis (8) by means of its specific tool guide mechanism, and is then produced in a definitive manner. The remaining second part of the profiled flank contour is then determined according to the rolling movement of the pair of rotors according to the first part of the profiled flank contour carried out by the tool, by means of an approximation which is as precise as possible. It is thus possible to obtain transversally different profiled contours according to the pitch and/or depth of teeth which can be modified along the axis of the rotor. A disk milling cutter is selected to be used as a profiled machine tool.

A thick walled Moineau-style stator (320) and method of manufacture are disclosed. The outer profile (355) of the stator follows the inner helical profile (353) of the stator. The application of an elastomeric layer (330) to the inner profile of the stator results in a constant thickness for the elastomeric layer and proximity for the walls of the stator. This improves the durability of the motor because of lower heat generation and better heat dissipation. The stator walls also support the elastomeric layer. Further, the thick walls of the preferred stator eliminate the need for additional drill piping or other support provided adjacent the stator. Thus, the cost of additional piping and difficulties placing a stator inside drill pipe or drill string housing are eliminated. Further, the improved strength of thick wall steel when contrasted to a thin wall counterpart allows a higher operating pressure drop for a given stator length, resulting in a higher power output. Moreover, the undulating outer profile of the stator provides a distinctive appearance to the stator piping.

Alternatively, the curve may comprise two curve segments, and one of the two curve segments comprising a tooth tip arc which is defined as an arc having a radius of curvature equal to or smaller than the difference between a radius of curvature of the outer circumferential circular arc and a radius of a pitch circle of the tooth profile, and the other of the two curve segments comprising a curve connected to the tooth root circular arc and determined by a curve generated by the tooth tip arc of the companion screw rotor. The other curve is defined by determining a curve which defines an imaginary rack and thereafter producing a tooth profile curve generated by the imaginary rack.
