A method of maintaining/driving the discharge of an AC discharge display in which at least one of a pair of discharge electrodes is covered with a dielectric layer. A pulse Vy is a narrow width pulse whose pulse width is shorter than a period for which the priming effect of generated charged particles or quasi-stable atoms persists in a discharge space. A pulse Vx is a wide width pulse which is generated before the priming effect produced by the pulse Vy disappears and at about the time when the pulse Vy is generated and has a pulse width long enough for the discharge to stop due to wall charges generated on the dielectric layer. The pulses Vx and Vy are continuously applied between the pair of electrodes to generate a sustained discharge and the influence of the collision of ions against the discharge electrodes and the phosphor is reduced.

In a plasma display discharge tube in which an XY matrix electrode is constituted by arranging pluralities of stripe-like anodes (11) and stripe-like cathodes (9) at prescribed intervals so that they can cross each other and by using the space formed by each of intersection as a picture element, and which is made to display a picture by selectively exciting the picture elements in accordance with the picture, an AC type memory electrode (1) which is opposed to the XY matrix electrodes (9 and 11) and commonly used by all picture elements, and an AC type auxiliary electrode (5) which is brought into contact with the electrode (1) through an insulating layer and supplies electric power by utilizing the coupling capacitance formed between the electrodes (1 and 5) are provided so that memory discharge display can be made between the matrix electrodes (9 and 11) and the memory electrode (1). When the discharge tube is constituted in such a way as described above, the discharge tube can have a simplified electrode structure, can be manufactured through a reduced manufacturing process, can be driven by using the pulse memory type driving method which has been considered to be realized only in DC plasma display discharge tubes having high luminous efficacy and responsiveness, and can be provided with AC type electrodes having long service lives.

A highly reliable plane display panel which has a large operating margin for making displaying operations and can stably display high-quality pictures, a method for manufacturing the panel, a controller for controlling the panel, and a method for driving the panel. The plane display panel is composed of a front glass substrate (1) provided with common electrodes and individual electrodes (3, 3a and 3b) which can be driven individually at every display cell, and a back glass substrate (10) having recessed sections which become discharging spaces. At the time of driving the plane display panel, the polarity of the wall charges accumulated on a dielectric layer (5) during displaying operations is inverted by applying voltage pulses to the individual electrodes (3) separately from the displaying operations. Thereafter, the electric field of the wall charges having the inverted polarity is added to the driving voltage, so that discharge can surely take place by applying voltage pulses for display to the electrodes (3).

An AC in-plane discharge plasma display panel is provided with a plurality of display elecdtrodes X and Y each of which has a multilayer structure comprising a transparent conductive film or a metallic film having a width narrower than that of the conductive film and a dielectric layer covering the electrodes X and Y from the discharging space. The dielectric layer is made of ZnO glass material substantially containing no lead. The dielectric layer covers up to the ends of the display electrodes and protect them. The dielectric layer is etched off in a succeeding process.

A plasma display panel comprises a front substrate; a rear substrate spaced apart from the front substrate; a plurality of barrier ribs formed between the front and rear substrates, defining discharge cells therebetween; a plurality of sustain electrode pairs disposed between the front substrate and the rear substrate; a plurality of address electrodes disposed between the front and rear substrates, overlapping the sustain electrode pairs; a discharge enhancement layer forming a step in a base region of each discharge cell; and a phosphor layer applied to the inner walls of the discharge cells. Each of the barrier ribs has a roughness that is less than that of the discharge enhancement layer, and this enables a more uniform distribution of the phosphor layer to be achieved.
