An image generator (103) then generates a second image by setting luminances of the second image in response to chrominance gradients of the first image. Specifically, the luminances may be determined as a monotonically increasing function of the chrominance gradients. The average of the luminance of the second image may be set to be no more than 10% of an average luminance of the first image. The approach may increase luminances for changing image areas higher than for flat image areas. The approach may allow an extreme power reduction while still providing relevant visual information. In particular, perceptually significant features may be emphasized.

In a plasma display, a first transistor is coupled between a low voltage terminal of a scan circuit and a power source configured to supply a scan voltage, and a second transistor is coupled between the low voltage terminal and the first transistor. A third transistor is coupled to the low voltage terminal, and a capacitor is coupled between the third transistor and a node between the first and second transistors. In addition, a fourth transistor is coupled between the low voltage terminal and a ground terminal. By utilizing the capacitor, power consumption of a transistor can be reduced, and accordingly, heat dissipation of the transistor also can be reduced.

The shutter glasses normally control a right-eye shutter and left-eye shutter even if a control signal to be received is temporarily missed. The image display section displays an image by alternately repeating a right-eye field and a left-eye field, and transmits first control signals synchronously with the right-eye field and left-eye field. The shutter glasses receive the first control signals, and have a right-eye shutter and left-eye shutter for transmitting and blocking visible light. The shutter glasses include a shutter control circuit that stores first timing information for a plurality of fields based on the received first control signals for the plurality of fields and generates second control signals based on the stored first timing information for the plurality of fields. The shutter glasses control the transmission and blocking of visible light at the right-eye shutter and left-eye shutter using the second control signals.
