The method includes discovering a first device associated with a first location, determining available data from the first discovered device, and inserting a listing for the first discovered device into an electronic program guide (EPG). A data structure in memory is disclosed that includes a device identifier field for containing data indicating an identifier for a discovered device, a name field for containing data indicating a name associated with the discovered device, a receiver available field for containing data indicating a data receiver is available for the discovered device location, an electronic program guide (EPG) field for containing data indicating an EPG and an EPG2 field for inserting listings for discovered device data into the EPG for display to a user at an STB. A system is disclosed for near real time data communication is also disclosed.

摘要： A carrier reproducing circuit which can stably reproduce carriers even when the CN ratio is low by measuring the phase of a signal by only using such a period that the multi-valued number is few and controlling a VCO or NCO (numerically controlled oscillator). At the time of reproducing the carriers, the occurrence of a pseudo-synchronous phenomenon is avoided in such a way that rough AFC is performed by inserting SYNC which is modulated with an already known pattern and has a relatively short length into modulated waves and the oscillation frequency of the VCO or NCO is swept over a wide range, and then, the sweeping is stopped at a frequency at which the SYNC is received. In addition, the period of a few multi-valued number having a certain degree of length is provided in the modulated waves and the difference between the frequency of received modulated signals and that of the local oscillation signal of the VCO or NCO in the period is determined, and then, the frequency difference is analyzed by using the phase differential function method, autocorrelation function method, or count method, etc., and the VCO or NCO is controlled based on the results of the analysis.

摘要： In a receiver for processing a vestigial sideband (VSB) modulated signal containing terrestrial broadcast high definition television information and a pilot component, and for which multipath interference can lead to significant attenuation within narrow bands of the received signal spectrum containing the pilot tone of an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) high definition television (HDTV) broadcast signal, it has been found desirable to amplify the input signal in order to achieve synchronization of the receiver's phase-locked loop to the received pilot tone. Once this initial acquisition has been established, the amplification applied to the received signal can be reduced to a level appropriate for remaining blocks in the demodulation chain without upsetting the pilot tone synchronization. Thus, according to the present invention, the gain applied to the received ATSC VSB signal is set higher during pilot tone acquisition than it is during the remaining stages of demodulation.
