A transmission/reception system having a transmitter and a receiver can be used in an encapsulated endoscope which can be swallowed into a biological body. The transmitter has a voltage converter for generating voltage according to transmission data, a voltage control oscillator for generating a signal of frequency according to the voltage generated by the voltage converter by non-feedback control, and a first antenna for emitting the signal generated by the voltage control oscillator. The receiver has a second antenna for receiving the signal emitted from the first antenna of the transmitter, a first amplifier for amplifying the signal received by the second antenna, an oscillator for generating a local oscillation signal, a mixer for mixing the signal amplified by the first amplifier with the local oscillation signal and converting the signal amplified by the first amplifier into an intermediate frequency signal, a detector for detecting the intermediate frequency signal, and a control unit for changing the frequency of the local oscillation signal according to the frequency of the received signal so that the intermediate frequency signal has a predetermined frequency. In this transmission/reception system, the transmitter can have a small size and power consumption can be reduced.

The electrical consumption of a cellular mobile telephone is reduced by using fractional-division phase-locked loops receiving a frequency reference from a fairly inaccurate quartz oscillator. Electrical consumption is also reduced by switching the output of the oscillator onto the input of the processing stage when the transmission/reception stage is inactive. The fractional-division phase-locked loops can then be deactivated.

A wideband receiver automatic frequency control (AFC) system which combines multipath or diverse antenna signals, before the carrier frequency error is determined, is provided herein. Rather than independently calculating the frequency error of each transmission path, frequency error is calculated after the multipath signals are summed together. Thus, only a single frequency detector circuit is required. The resulting automatic frequency control system has the accuracy of a system which combines the independently calculated frequency errors, with fewer steps of computation required. A method for combining multipath signals to calculate an average AFC frequency error is also provided.

A precision carrier frequency signal for calibrating a local oscillator (56) of a GPS receiver which is used to acquire GPS signals. The precision carrier frequency signal is used to calibrate the local oscillator such that the output of the local oscillator, which is used to acquire GPS signals, is modified by a reference signal generated from the precision carrier frequency signal. The GPS receiver locks (53) to this precision carrier frequency signal and generates the reference signal. In another aspect of the invention, satellite almanac data is transmitted to a remote GPS receiver unit (20) from a base station (12) via a communication link. The remote GPS receiver unit uses this satellite almanac data to determine approximate Doppler data for satellites in view of the remote GPS receiver unit.
