An apparatus is provided for locking an ink jet resonator assembly into a printhead of a continuous ink jet printer. The locking apparatus comprises a resonator holder for holding the resonator prior to alignment of the resonator assembly; a frame for supporting the resonator holder and the resonator assembly after alignment; and a methyl-cyanoacrylate adhesive applied between the resonator holder and the frame to lock into position the properly aligned resonator assembly.

An orifice plate is fabricated for use in an ink jet printer. Initially, a mandrel is provided, and a holder is aligned to the mandrel. The mandrel and the holder are maintained in intimate contact and at equal electrical potential. The mandrel and the holder are placed at cathodic polarity. A plating material is then applied to the combined mandrel and holder to cause the mandrel and holder to form a single orifice plate directly bonded to the holder. The mandrel is then removed from the orifice plate.

An ink jet ink composition comprises a liquid vehicle, a pigment, and a polymer to overcome conductivity. The problem to be addressed for carbon black pigment inks is how to achieve high dried ink film resistivity while maintaining print quality. With the present invention, dried ink resistivity of aqueous pigment ink is improved by using polymers to overcome conductivity. The present invention results in significant improvement in dried film resistivity of carbon black pigment ink jet inks, sufficient to eliminate charge lead to charge lead shorts and improve machine runnability and can, therefore, be used in ink jet printers.

An ink mist collector assembly collects ink mist formed on a printhead of an ink jet printing system. The ink mist collector assembly comprises a magnetic material, and a porous material attached to the magnetic material to create a porous magnetic unit. The ink mist collector assembly further comprises means for engaging the porous magnetic unit to the printhead, to collect ink mist formed on the printhead.

A method for avoiding drop charge switching errors in continuous ink jet printing of the kind using stimulation to regulate ink drop break-off of a linear array of ink streams. The method includes the steps of: controlling ink drop stimulation so that the phase distribution of drop break-off along the length of the ink stream array remains stable in time and charging stimulated drop streams in at least two different groups during at least two different address periods which are offset in phase so that all drop streams are addressed during a drop break-off condition.

A system for selectively shifting the phase of drop charging along the array of ink jets of a continuous ink jet printer by producing a replicate signal of the drop stimulation signal; selectively shifting the phase of the replicate signal to provide a phase control signal; synchronizing a media feed tachometer signal to the phase control signal to produce a print enable signal; and controlling address of the charge electrodes with the print enable signal. The system further includes a selection mode wherein drop charge phase can be made random by selecting synchronization with the media feed tachometer signal.

A print head device is used in continuous ink jet printing. The device comprises a resonator means and ink supply body having a solid formed of high acoustic Q material. Transducer means are attached to the resonator means. The transducer means are energized at a desired drop frequency. Damping means (38) are provided for suppression of undesired interfering vibration modes of the resonator means and ink supply body, to achieve a desired mode. The damping means (38) are placed in regions having relatively high stress in the interfering modes and relatively low stress in the desired mode.

An ink jet printer (10) for printing in a wide format includes a plurality of ink jet print heads (12 a-d) for producing rows of regularly spaced apart ink jets. The print heads (12 a-d) are supported and located by first and second print head carriages (28 a-d) that are controllably moveable to locate the print heads (12 a-d) to within a fraction of an ink jet spacing in directions both parallel with and perpendicular to the direction of movement of the print medium (14). The first and second carriages (28 a-d) are spaced apart along the direction of relative movement of the print medium (14) by a distance sufficient to permit the first and second print heads (12 a-d) to be arranged in an interleaved relation, or an end to end relation.
