摘要:
Specific attributes or characteristics of a desired high quality, high durability print image are identified and quantified. The parameters of the printing system which have a direct influence upon the print image characteristics are also identified and quantified. A system for controlling each of the printing system parameters, individually and in combination, is provided so that a print image exhibiting optimal characteristics may be reproduced consistently and accurately, regardless of variations in substrates or printing environments.

An ink jet image transfer lithographic apparatus is coupled to a source for supplying graphics and textual material to an ink jet printhead. The ink jet printhead melts a hydrophobic solid ink and sprays the ink onto a lithographic plate in a predetermined pattern. The solid ink solidifies upon contact with the plate. The plate is then mounted in a lithographic press for lithographic printing. As an alternative, the ink jet printhead may be mounted in a lithographic press for imaging a lithographic plate mounted in the lithographic press or for spraying ink directly onto the plate cylinder of the press. A succession of lithographic plates may be provided around the plate cylinder of the lithographic press and each plate discarded after use, leaving a clean plate on the plate cylinder.

A hot melt ink jet ink comprises a dispersed solid pigment which is formulated in a wax, or high molecular weight fatty acid or alcohol vehicle to form a hot melt ink which is solid at room temperature but liquid at above 80°C, that is under the usual conditions of use. In a preferred embodiment, dispersed graphite in a non-evaporative oil carrier, such as mineral oil, is formulated with candelilla wax, stearic acid and/or behenic acid.

In an ink jet apparatus, a series of solid-state ink members (24) are arranged in an elongated array above a heated ink reservoir (12), whereby the ink members are advanced along a linear path extending through the array to a discharge location at one end of path where the members drop into the reservoir.

Method and apparatus for an ink jet, in which ink is maintained in a solid-state in a reservoir and in a liquid state in an imaging system, during a standby mode, the ink is heated in the reservoir to change the phase of the ink to the liquid phase, and the ink in the reservoir and in the imaging system is maintained in a liquid state during the ink droplet ejection mode.

A block of solid state ink (26) is sequentially melted as it is advanced against a heater plate (34). Sequentially melted ink flows into a reservoir (40) which supplies one or more ink jets.
