A printing apparatus includes a transport mechanism section which has a support surface that supports and transports a workpiece, a printing mechanism section which has an ink jet head that executes printing on the workpiece that is transported by the transport mechanism section, a detecting section which is provided further on the upstream side in the transport direction than the ink jet head and detects an upper surface position of the workpiece, an adjustment section which adjusts a separation distance between the support surface and the ink jet head, and a control section. In addition, the control section selects a first mode for printing and a second mode for stopping printing by adjusting the separation distance by operating the adjustment section based on a detection result of the detecting section.

A method and system are disclosed for ejecting ink drops from a plurality of ink jet nozzles in order to print on an envelope in a mail piece production process. The envelope has been stuffed and is therefore not flat, especially near the edges. Mail piece composition data is obtained and stored for the mail piece, and based upon that composition data a nozzle delay pattern is determined. For each ink jet nozzle, ink is ejected in accordance with the delay pattern so as to contact a point of the envelope's surface at the same time as drops from other ink jet nozzles.

Printhead-to-platen spacing (PPS) variation (53) along a scan axis (17) is found by shining a light beam from pen carriage (12) to print-medium position (15) and back to detector (21,21'), and applying a pathlength/intensity correlation (44). Sensing is done while scanning, to find relative PPS profile (53) along the track. With no medium in place (Fig.4) this measures mechanical imperfections ― and can be corrected by later deducting thickness (t) of a medium (16). If medium is present (Fig.5), adjustment is omitted. For absolute values a plural-lamp (20',20") sensor is calibrated for each lamp, at the PPS design point (Fig.7). Pagewide/webwide variants are included.

[Object] To provide a method and apparatus for discharging a liquid material, which can solve the problems regarding the occurrence of a satellite and accuracy of a landing position. [Solving Means] In a method for discharging a liquid material in the state of a liquid droplet through a discharge orifice by applying inertial force to the liquid material, the method is characterized in comprising the steps of measuring a distance A from a lower end of the discharge orifice to a lower end of the liquid material having flowed out from the discharge orifice at the time when the liquid material having flowed out from the discharge orifice separates from the discharge orifice, and setting a distance B between the lower end of the discharge orifice and a work surface to be approximately the same as the distance A. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.
