The present invention relates to a contents reception device and method, a contents transmission device and method, a program, and a recording medium, whereby a Push-type NRT service can be realized. "Ch. 4" is taken as a broadcasting channel for normal broadcasting, and "Ch. 5" and "Ch. 6" are taken as broadcasting channels for NRT. The broadcasting channel "Ch. 5" is multiplexed on logical channels "VC5-1", "VC5-2", and "VC5-3". The logical channel "VC5-1" is assigned to a single Push-type NRT broadcasting service, and "VC5-2" is assigned to a Pull-type NRT broadcast. The logical channel "VC5-3" is assigned to another Push-type NRT broadcasting service. Three FLUTE sessions are provided to "VC5-2".

The present invention relates to a transmission apparatus and method, a reception apparatus and method, and a transmission and reception system by which content which meets the needs at the time can be acquired. A server 11 generates a PDI-Q representative of a question about the tastes of a user of a client 12, and transmits the PDI-Q and a provider side PDI-A representative of an answer set by a provider to the question about the tastes of the user to the client 12. The client 12 generates, in response to the PDI-Q transmitted thereto from the server 11, a user side PDI-A representative of an answer of the user to the question. Then, the client 12 carries out matching between the user side PDI-A and the provider side PDI-A transmitted from the server 11 with each other to determine acquisition of content distributed from the server 11. The present invention can be applied to a broadcasting system which broadcasts a digital television program.

By describing electrical program guide information in a language such as XML and then multiplexing the electrical program guide information to a broadcast signal for transmission, an advertisement, images and sounds can be easily entered and various program guides can be realized. For manufacturers of receiving devices, it suffices to develop only the software for receiving, decoding and displaying received XML data, and there is no need to develop the software for displaying the EPG for each type of receiving device. Thus, the number of development steps can be reduced.

Hybrid broadcasting and communication services are made excellently implementable. A transport stream obtained by time-division multiplexing a first transmission packet including a predetermined component and a second transmission packet including information on the predetermined component is generated. The transport stream is transmitted along a predetermined transmission path. Information on a plurality of distribution protocols, the information on each distribution protocol including at least location information and protocol identification information, for acquiring a specific component to be acquired on a communication path, or acquisition information for acquiring the information on the plurality of distribution protocols is inserted into the second transmission packet, in relation to the specific component. A receiving side can excellently receive the specific component through a distribution protocol in accordance with its own distribution network environment.

The reception apparatus obtains first meta data including class information for providing, in multiple modes, a service identified by an IP address and transmitted by a broadcast wave of digital broadcast using an IP transmission method, and controls reproduction of a component by connecting to a stream of the component constituting the service for each of the multiple modes on the basis of the class information included in the first meta data. A TTML subtitle data storage packet storing TTML subtitle data as payload of a MMT packet defined in the MMT format, and a signaling message including subtitle-related information corresponding to the TTML subtitle data are transmitted from a transmission device to a reception device. The signaling message defines therein a time mode (TMD) as subtitle display timing control mode, and an operation mode (OPM) of selectively performing instant display of subtitles or TTML description-based display thereof, and the reception device can conduct display control in a designated mode.
