A circular knitting machine ( 20 ) comprises rotary needle cylinder, knitting needles, spring jacks, selector jacks (24) and a multi-tier electrically controlled needle selecting device ( 30 ). The needle selecting device ( 30 ) includes piezoelectric elements ( 32 ) and pattern fingers ( 33 ) for selecting and causing the selector jacks (24) control the movement of the needles ( 22 ) between welt, tuck and knit positions. A pre-pusher cam ( 34 ) is provided paritally to push the selector jacks (24) inwardly before these selector jacks are engaged by the pattern fingers ( 33 ) which increases the range of selection and permits increased speed in fine gauge knitting machines (24 gauge and higher) and which permits a reduction in the number of piezoelectric elements in coarse gauge machines and the inclusion of an interlock jacquard apparatus.

A jacquard pattern control mechanism for a circular knitting machine (20) comprising a plurality of rocker bar supporting members (40) slidable in grooves (26) along which move knitting elements (27), a plurality of elongate rocker bars (44) pivotally mounted on the rocker bar supporting members (40) for movement about medial pivots, the opposite end portions of the rocker bars (44b,44c) being selectively movable between operative and inoperative positions and having magnetically attractable sections (44f,44g) thereon, and magnet attracting devices (50) operatively associated with the opposite end portions of the elongate rocker bars for selectively attracting one of the magnetically attractable sections at opposite ends of the rocker bars to pivot the rocker bars and selectively move the opposite end portions thereof to the other operative and inoperative positions. The magnetic attracting devices (50) comprise a permanent magnet and a pair of electromagnets (51,52) disposed on opposite sides of the permanent magnet and connected in series, the permanent magnet having an extension extending outwardly towards the rocker bars and having a pair of wing portions extending outwardly from the center portion of the extension, generally parallel to the rocker bar supporting members (40). The wing portions of the permanent magnet cooperate with the core parts of the electromagnets (51,52) in providing stronger magnetic fields for attraction of the magnetically attractable sections (44f,44g) of the rocker bars (44).

The present invention provides a jacquard pattern control mechanism for a circular knitting machine in which knitting instrumentalities (26) are selected in accordance with a jacquard pattern and are moved between three positions, namely, welt, tuck and knit positions, by a selector jack (34), a rocker base (41) a rocker bar (44) pivotally mounted on the rocker base and control cams (32,38,48) for controlling the knitting instrumentality, selector jack, rocker base and rocker bar. Electromagnetic selection mechanisms (53,55,56) attract selected portions of the rocker bar (44) to determine to which position the knitting instrumentality will be moved. The selection mechanisms are more compact and have shorter strokes to permit selection of all types of knitting instrumentalities and all three positions without reducing the number of yarn feeds.
