摘要: An electron beam therapy system and a facility for using an electron beam therapy system. In the preferred embodiment, the electron beam therapy system comprises a linear accelerator (16), microwave source (30), and associated electronics disposed in a housing (10). The housing (10) is mounted on a positioning means (50) such as a C-arm to direct the electron beam to the desired site on the patient. The entire housing (10) and positioning means (50) is mobile and may be moved to different locations (71, 72) in the facility. Connectors (77, 78) are provided at the different locations (71, 72) in the facility to connect the electron beam source to a central power source within the facility.

摘要: A soft docking system is provided for a medical treatment system (10), such as an intraoperative electron beam therapy system. The medical treatment system includes a treatment head (12), an applicator (20) having a fixed position relative to a patient (24), and apparatus for adjusting the position of the treatment head relative to the applicator. The soft docking system includes one or more sensing head assemblies (50, 52, 54) for sensing a position of the treatment head relative to the applicator and for providing one or more position signals representative thereof, and a display (100) responsive to the position signals for indicating the position of the treatment head relative to the applicator. The position of the treatment head may be adjusted so that the display indicates a desired position.

摘要: An apparatus for the linear acceleration of electrons, particularly for intraoperative radiation therapy, including:
-- an articulated structure (51) for moving a radiating head (32) that comprises an acceleration structure (39) constituted by a plurality of cavities (26); -- a modulator for generating, controlling, and transmitting a radio-frequency (34, 36) to the cavities (26) of the acceleration structure (39); and -- processing and control devices (30) adapted to control the apparatus; the modulator (34, 36) is separate from the radiating head (32) and the connection occurs by virtue of waveguide means (38) adapted to carry the radio-frequency to the acceleration structure (32).

摘要: A collimating arrangement for use in radiotherapy apparatus has a set of mutually contiguous members (8) for substantially attenuating radiation. The positions of the members (8) are adjustable so that edges (8a) thereof form an adjustable aperture (9) for defining the cross-sectional shape of the beam. A lamp (12) illuminates an area including the beam-defining edges (8a). Each of the members (8) is provided with a respective retroreflector (19) for reflecting illumination from the lamp (12) into the camera (13) substantially independently of the position of the beam-defining edges (8a). A detecting arrangement, including a video camera (13), more responsive to the higher intensity of illumination reflected from the retroreflectors (19) than from respectively adjacent regions in the illuminated area, is used to detect the positions of the retroreflectors (19) which are respectively representative of the positions of the edges of the members.

摘要: @ An electron accelerator unit comprises a source (2) of an electron beam (8) and means (20) for finally directing at least a portion of the beam (8) to a therapy site. The directing means (20) is mechanically independent of, and electrically insulated from, the source (2) of the electron beam (8). In particular, the directing means (20) comprises an electron applicator which is removeably attached to a secondary collimator which takes the form of a support plate (22) having a centrally located hole (24). The support plate (22) is connected to an adjustable support (28) which may be attached to a rail of a patient treatment couch. The accelerator also comprises a means (32, 34, 36, 38) for aligning the electron source (2) with the electron applicator (20). The aligning means is preferably formed by light emitters for projecting intersecting beams of light (32A, 32B, 34A, 34B, 36A, 36B, 38A, 38B) from the region of the electron source (2) towards the electron applicator (20), and by a target area (22) located on the electron applicator (20). When the source (2) and the applicator (20) are properly aligned, the intersecting beams from a predetermined light pattern on the target area (22).
