The rewinder further includes a first driver (26) that is operatively connected to and controls the rotational speed of at least one of the rollers (14, 16), and a second driver t (30) hat is operatively connected to and controls the rotational speed of at least one of the rollers (12), and wherein the rollers (14, 16) driven by the first driver (26) are different than the rollers (12) driven by the second driver (30). The rotational speed and/or direction of one or more of the rollers (12, 14, 16) can be varied whereby a log (22) of sheet material formed within the winding cradle can be ejected through either the first or second gap.

To remove a roll of backing (34) from the take-up spindle (50), the perimeter of the take-up spindle (50) is reduced by sliding the fin (56) along the ramp (68). With the perimeter of the take-up spindle (50) reduced, the backing (34) slides easily over and off of the take-up spindle (50).

The invention relates to a method in reeling up, wherein paper reels are continuously formed on reeling cores from a continuous paper web. According to the invention, the paper reel (PR) is brought to the formation of the paper reel by utilizing a closed supporting belt rotation (1), on the outer surface of the supporting belt rotation (1). Further, the paper web (PR) is transferred from the outer surface of the supporting belt rotation (1) directly on the paper reel (R) formed on a reeling core. Thus a first nip contact (SN) is maintained substantially at that point of the supporting belt rotation (1) in which the paper web (PR) is transferred to the paper reel (R) that is being formed, and in addition to the first nip contact (SN), the paper reel (R) that is being formed is affected with at least one, second nip contact (PN). This invention concerns a winding device (10) for producing a roll of batting (12). For this purpose, the batting (14) is wound on a rotating core (H) driven by an endless belt (18). The core can be positioned in a loop (20) of the belt (18) formed between two pulleys (R1, R2) which can be stretched by means of a tension-setting device (22). As the size of the roll (12) increases, the size of the loop increases. At least one (R1) of the deviation pulleys (R1, R2) can be placed between a working position designed to form the loop (20) and an ejection position, into which the pulley can be positioned to eject the roll of batting (12), the belt (18) being stretched when the loop (20) is removed. In addition to the tension-setting device (22), at least one compensating element (R6, R6'', R2, R3, R5, R6') is provided to compensate for at least the greater part of the changes on belt length which arise in certain zones when the adjustable pulley (R1) is moved from a working position to an ejecting position and the belt (18) tightens during removal of the loop (20). On the other hand, the changes in belt length which arise during winding in certain zones as the loop (20) grows larger with increasing size if the batting roll (12) are compensated for the most part by the tension-setting device (22).

The invention pertains a rider roll unit for winding machines with at least one support or carrier drum for winding web-like material to be wound: with at least one rider roll (1) rotatably mounted to a tie-bar (2) for placing the roll (12) to be wound under a load, as a function of its diameter; with pivotably mounted arms (3) to support the tie-bar (2); and with drive means (9) for pivoting the support arms (3) as a function of the change in diameter of the roll (12) to be wound. For optimizing the winding structure, the tie-bar (2) with the rider roll (1) can pivot at the support arms (3) around the first axle (10) parallel to the support roll, and a guide-bar (4) hinged at the tie-bar (2) around a second axle (11) parallel to the support roll causes a forced pivoting of the tie-bar (2) with the rider roll (1) about the first axle (10), when the tie-bar (2) with the rider roll (1) is lifted in accordance with the increasing diameter of the roll, so that the acting direction of the rider roll (1) changes on the roll (12). Thus, the operating direction of the rider roll is always at a right angle with respect to the surface of the wound roll making it possible to use highly sensitive control means to control the contact pressure.

A method and apparatus for handling logs of convolutely wound webs which includes providing a rewinder-tail sealer (21) wherein a glue stripe is applied to a predetermined circumferential location on a partially unwound log and the log rewound by rolling on itself toward and into a pair of spaced-apart rollers (37,38), providing a path from the roller pair (37,38) to log receiver (25) wherein logs sequentially roll in the path, the path having fixed dimensions, operating the rewinder-tail sealer (21) to develop logs of a first nominal diameter to enable the roller pair (37,38) to controllably rotate each log for positioning the glue stripe at a first angular orientation, which in combination with the fixed dimensioned path enables each log to be received in the receiver (25) with its glue stripe in a second angular orientation, changing the operation of the rewinder (25) to develop logs of a second nominal diameter, and by correlating the second nominal diameter with the fixed dimensioned path to enable each second nominal diameter log to be received in said receiver (25) with its glue stripe in the second angular orientation and adjusting the spacing between the roller pair (37,38) to be slightly less than the second nominal diameter.
