This invention relates to an aqueous-swellable and degradable diverting system and the use of the system in treating a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore. The diverting system comprises a carrier fluid and an aqueous-swellable particle that does not swell or does not swell substantially when placed in contact with the carrier fluid. The carrier fluid is capable of carrying and placing the aqueous-swellable particle into a stimulation network substantially distanced from a wellbore. The carrier fluid may be a non-aqueous fluid, or when the average size of the aqueous-swellable particle is sufficient large, the carrier fluid may also be an aqueous fluid. Exposure of the diverting composition to sufficient amount of aqueous fluid swells the particle, bridges a desired portion of the stimulation network and then dissolves at least a portion of the diverting composition. The diverting techniques of the invention allow for treatment in a subterranean formation to be diverted to a previously untreated portion of the formation, in particular a portion of the formation that is significantly distanced from the wellbore.

The composition comprises: (A) water; (B) a weighting agent; (C) an organic solvent that is immiscible with water; and (D) a surfactant adapted for forming an oil- external emulsion of the organic solvent and the water, wherein the surfactant is unstable to hydrolysis. The composition is formed to be an oil-external emulsion. The density of the composition is formulated to be greater than that of pure water at standard temperature and pressure. A method of treating a subterranean formation comprising the steps of providing a gelled liquid hydrocarbon treatment fluid comprising a liquid hydrocarbon and a gelling agent that comprises a polyvalent metal salt of an organophosphonic acid ester or a polyvalent metal salt of an organophosphinic acid, and treating the subterranean formation with the gelled liquid hydrocarbon treatment fluid. The gelled liquid hydrocarbon treatment fluids of the present invention are suitable for use in subterranean treatment operations, such as subterranean stimulation and sand control treatments like fracturing and gravel packing, that may be carried out in subterranean formations for the production of hydrocarbons. The compositions and methods of the present invention also may be suitable, for example, to be used as plugging agents, well bore cleanup fluids, viscous sweep fluids, or insulating fluids to be used in associated methods.
