A product and method of manufacturing a non-woven, industrial hydrophobic absorbent. The absorbent includes a core of cotton ginning byproducts (such as cotton regin) and bicomponent fibers. The cotton regin is processed to create a low-density and, thus, a high-absorbency web. The method includes processing cotton regin to a suitable range of fiber length and particle sizes, mixing the cotton regin with a thermoplastic bonding agent, and depositing the material onto a steadily advancing belt to produce a relatively low density, loosely formed web core. Subsequent processing of the web core in an oven softens or melts the bonding agent, thereby adheres it to other web material to give the web core desired strength and integrity. At least one, dual-layer, continuous, air-permeable scrim is secured or bonded the core to provide additional strength and an exterior surface having enhanced grip and non-slip characteristics.

The absorbent is composed of an assembly of pulverized cellulose fibers that includes at least 45 mass % of fine cellulose fibers having a fiber length of 0.35 mm or less. The absorbent is formed into a sheet-shaped or a columnar configuration, or a surface sheet is laminated on a surface of the absorbent. The absorbent composed of 70 through 90 mass % of cellulose fibers that include 45 mass % or more of fine cellulose fibers having a fiber length of 0.35 mm or less, and 5 through 30 mass % of a fusion-bondable resin exhibits good formability.

Fibre materials may be bast fibres and can include, hemp, jute, flax, ramie, kenaf, rattan , soya, okra, vine, peat, kapok, sisal, and banana. The different plant derived material may be straws of wheat, oat, rye, barley, grass, rice, bean, rape or other plant materials such as coconut husk, cellulose, paper, or cardboard. The web for the mat is formed by dry suction airlaying of the fibres.
