A flexible conduit (10) is formed in part with a helically wound band of metal (11) that provides resistance to burst pressure. The band has a leading edge lip or hook (22) and a trailing edge hook (23) that engage and interlock when the band is helically wound. The cross section of the band has an asymmetrical Z-shaped profile with a main body section intermediate the band edges. An upstream valley (26) is formed between the leading edge hook (22) and the main body (21), and a downstream valley (27) is formed between the trailing edge hook (23) and the main body (21). When the band is helically wound, the downstream hook of one turn of the band is received in the upstream valley of the previous turn of the band so that the downstream and upstream hooks form an interlock holding the windings together. In the wound configuration, the thickness of the profile between the upstream valley and the internal surface of the tube is greater than the thickness of the profile between the downstream valley and the external surface of the tube to provide greater material thickness to reduce contact stress at the hook and valley interface and to reduce alternating stresses in the valley corners.

The invention is characterised in that the arch (2) has an internal surface with helical undulation, comprising at least concave (16) and convex (15) rounded parts and the external surface of the internal metal tube is supported in its concave rounded part (10) by a convex part (15) of the arch (2) internal surface and in its convex rounded part (11) by a concave part (16) of the arch internal surface, said internal arch surface and said internal tube external surface matching in form, and the interstices (i) between the adjacent spires are small. The invention is particularly applicable to flexible conduits used in oil mining.

Disclosed is a rigid or flexible conduit usable particularly for transporting fluids and enabling to limit the permeability to transported fluids. According to the invention, the conduit comprises at least an inner flexible sheath (1) made of thermoplastic, elastic, or rubber material and an outer sheath (10) comprising a metal layer (3) and arranged around said inner sheath (1). Said metal layer comprises at least a layer of flat metal band (3) which is spirally wound with a winding angle alpha higher than 50o and lower than 90o with respect to the axes of the conduit. For rigid conduits, said metal layer (3) is adhered to said inner flexible sheath (1) on the major part of the width of the band (3). For flexible conduits, the turns present superposition areas so as to provide for a complete covering of said inner sheath (1), the superposition areas (30) of the band turns on one hand and the areas comprised between said superposition areas on the other hand, having each a width at least equal to amplitude of the deformation imposed to the outer sheath by the maximum bending or traction of the conduit. Application particularly to the transportation of corrosive fluids under pressure, to the oil industry at the drilling site or the production.

The inner pipe consists of a material which is selected from a polyvinylidene fluoride copolymer resin, a blend thereof with a polyvinylidene fluoride resin, or a composition based on the polyvinylidene fluoride copolymer resin and which has, when hot pressed into a sheet, an Izod impact strength of 10 kg-cm/cm or more and an apparent Young's modulus in tension of 90 kg/mm 2 or less.
