The invention relates to a method for controlling the transmission of a vehicle, especially an automatic transmission or an automated transmission. The gear ratio and the shifting characteristics corresponding thereto are adjusted using predefined shift programs ('0', 'Eco', 'Normal', 'Sport', 'Uphill II', 'Warm-Up', 'Tip-Shift') in a manner depending on the operational state. Depending on an actual operating state of the vehicle, at least one special function ('Cornering Detection KE', 'FAST Accelerator Reset FO', 'Spontaneous Delay Vehicle SVF', 'Speed Control FGR', 'Driving Stability Control ESP') is activated and prevents a change, required by a shift program, from an actual ratio of the transmission to a target gear ratio within a predefined operational rage of the vehicle. In a first embodiment of the method, the operational range within which a change of ratio of the transmission is prevented is varied depending on characteristics that depend on the operational state. In a second embodiment of the method, the shifting characteristics are varied depending on characteristics that depend on the operational state in such a manner that operational states of the vehicle which are defined by the shifting characteristics and at which the gear ratio change has to be carried out are adapted to the actual operational state of the vehicle.
