A system and method of multi-symbol communications from a transmitter to a receiver via a channel, including transmitting signals as a waveform representing a sequence of symbols, each symbol of unit-interval duration and each symbol associated with its own signal level. This method includes graphically representing the waveform as an eye diagram having a horizontal time axis and a vertical signal level axis arranged to form one or more eyes, and using a sampling point in each eye to determine which signal the waveform in any unit interval represents. Each sampling point has a phase and a decision threshold. The method further includes identifying the eyes in the eye diagram, finding a convex polygonal region fitting within each eye, finding a largest rectangle fitting the convex polygonal region of each eye, and positioning the sampling point in each eye at a center of the rectangle of that eye.

The data buffering unit 13 buffers data every n bits in synchronization with the clock. To compensate for timer drift, it is proposed to compare the cycles of the timer (14, 15) in the sensor (4, 5) to the cycles of a central timer (18) in the control unit (8). A correction factor for the data from the sensor (4, 5) is calculated from the comparison, in order to thereby correct incorrect runtime data.

Apparatus and methods of communication are provided. In one embodiment, a communication frame is generated and includes a synchronization section, and at least two data sections and at least two preamble sections. A receiver synchronizes with a transmitter using the synchronization section, and may also re-synchronize with the transmitter using at least one preamble section. In another embodiment, the length of the data sections are selected to ensure that drift between the receiver and transmitter will be minimal before re-synchronization. Additional embodiments of the invention may employ ultra-wideband communication technology.
