A silver halide emulsion which comprises silver halide grains dispersed in a hydrophilic colloid mixture comprising from 5 % to 25 % by weight of dextran, from 20 % to 40 % by weight of hydrogenated poly-saccharide having an average molecular weight equal to or lower than 10,000, and from 40 % to 60 % by weight of gelatin. A fore-hardened photographic material comprising such an emulsion and the use of such an emulsion in a photographic material increases the sensitometry and mechanical resistance of such a photographic material.

A process for precipitating a high bromide silver halide emulsion in an aqueous medium is disclosed comprising growing nucleated silver halide grains in a reaction vessel in the presence of a peptizer comprising a water dispersable starch to form high bromide radiation-sensitive silver halide grains, wherein the majority of grain growth in the reaction vessel is performed at a pH of less than 3.5. Growth of high bromide silver halide emulsion grains in the presence of a starch peptizer at low pH in accordance with the invention results in emulsion grains with lower fog, even in the absence of the use of strong oxidizing agents during grain precipitation.

One object of the present invention is to provide a mixture composed of 1) a cellulose ether derivative esterified at least with a biprotic acid group derivative expressed by the formula HOOC-B-COOH (I), wherein B is a linear aliphatic group represented by (CH 2 ) x with x a positive integer from 1 to 5 or is a 5-member or 6-member cycloaliphatic group and 2) a cellulose or cellulose derivative esterified at least with a phthalic acid derivative represented by the following formula (II). wherein R 1 is an alkyl group and y is a positive integer from 0 to 3. Said mixture shows an enhanced stability against hydrolysis when subjected to conditioning at high relative humidity and temperature. The composition may be useful in order to get antihalation layer on photographic films as well as enteric coating of pharmaceutical dosage and for controlled-release applications such as for cleaning formulation.

A method is disclosed for washing silver halide photographic emulsions, including desalting and/or concentrating, based on depletion phase separation mechanism, wherein phase separation is effected by the addition of water-soluble non-interactive and non-adsorbing non-ionic polymers or non-ionic surfactant micelles. The process involves the separation of the supernatant fluid, containing the undesirable water-soluble salts and the added phase separating agents, from the washed and condensed silver halide phase and redispersion of the latter.
