A device for insulating the spray liquid source from the high tension voltage of an electrostatic spray system when using an electrically conductive spray liquid. The device comprises a spray gun (13), a supply line (12) which connects the spray gun (13) to a spray liquid reservoir (10) and which includes a vessel (16) containing a barrier forming liquid (17) of low electrical conductivity and a density other than that of the spray liquid. The vessel (16), which is substantially non-conductive is connected at its inlet end (24) to the earth potential and at its outlet end (19) to the same high potential as the spray gun (13). An electrode means (22; 25) is provided in the vessel (16) to expose the spray liquid passing through the vessel (16) to at least one intermediate potential for controlling the tension gradient in the barrier forming liquid by limiting and controlling the charging of the spray liquid.

A valve spindle (39) which is non-rotatively connected to the drive member (10) and rotatively supported in a coaxial bore (35) in the rear spindle portion (15) is provided with both a cam means (40) for engaging the seal elements (21, 22) for urging the latters into contact with the fluid chamber wall (14) and a passage forming means (42, 43) for cooperation with passages (44, 45) in the rear spindle portion (15) for short circuiting the fluid chamber compartments (H.P. and L.P.) during every second of said intervals.

Two radially movable seal elements (14, 15) of cylindrical shape are supported in a through slot (13) in the output spindle (12) and are arranged to sealingly cooperate with two axially extending ridges (17, 18) in the fluid chamber (11). A first set of two diametrically opposed and helically extending seal ribs (19, 20) on the drive member (10) is arranged to sealingly cooperate with a second set of two diametrically opposed and helically extending seal ribs (21, 22) on the output spindle (12). The pitch of one of the ribs (19) on the drive member (10) is equal to the pitch of one of the ribs (21) on the output spindle (12), whereas the other of the ribs (20) on the drive member (10) has a pitch that is equal to the pitch of the other rib (22) on the output spindle (12) but different to the pitch of the first mentioned ribs (19, 21). Thereby, a sealing cooperation of the seal ribs (19-22) occurs just once per relative revolution between the drive member (10) and the output spindle (12).
