The present invention provides a method, system and apparatus for providing security in an unlicensed mobile access network or a generic access network by receiving a message containing a mobile identity of a mobile station (MS) and dropping or rejecting the message whenever the received mobile identity does not match a stored mobile identity associated with the MS. The message is processed whenever the received mobile identity matches the stored mobile identity associated with the MS. The stored mobile identity is provided by a secure gateway. The mobile identity can be an International Mobile Subscriber Identity, Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity, Packet Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity, private Internet Protocol (IP) address or public IP address. The message can be a registration request, uplink message or a downlink message, such as a Mobility Management message, a General Packet Radio Service Mobility Management message, or a UMA or Unlicensed Radio Resources message.

When the UNC detects a network failure that prevents service to the mobile station, the UNC prohibits new registrations by other mobile stations, starts a timer, and monitors the network failure to determine if the failure clears. If the failure clears before the timer expires, new registrations are accepted from other mobile stations. However, if the timer expires before the failure clears, the UNC continues to prohibit new registrations from other mobile stations, and deregisters the mobile station when a network Keep Alive timer expires for the mobile station. When a plurality of mobile stations are registered with the UNC, the UNC deregisters the plurality of mobile stations one at a time as the network Keep Alive timer expires for each mobile station.

An end node in a packet-switched network is proposed wherein the end node is arranged to exchange packets consisting of a packet header and payload data with a server node connected to the packet-switched network. The end node includes at least one module adapted to extract quality of service parameter values from the headers of packets received over the packet-switched network (402) and to insert the extracted quality of service parameter value in the headers of packets destined for transmission to the server node over the packet-switched network (405). In this manner the end node automatically adapts the quality of service parameters received over the packet-switched network to correspond with the type of quality of service defined in received packets. Such a system means that only the server node need be configured with the quality of service parameters applicable on the particular packet switched network, so greatly reducing the installation and configuration overheads in a multi-user network.
