摘要:
An improved method of scheduling ratio shifting in a vehicle transmission adaptively adjusts the normal shift schedule to avoid shift-related overheating of the torque transmitting devices of the transmission. In normal operation, transmission shifting is scheduled by comparing measured vehicle speed and engine throttle position values with predefined load data. In the background, the transmission control unit determines the cumulative thermal energy stored in the torque transmitting devices. If excessive energy is indicated, the normal shift schedule is modified to allow extended operation in the lower speed ratios. When the cumulative energy indication returns to a normal level, normal shift scheduling is resumed.

A mechanical clutch (52,56) is provided to selectively interconnect a forward (66) or reverse (70) gear member to a transmission shaft (62). The clutch is operated by a servo piston (16) and fork (30) structure. The servo piston is slidably disposed in a housing (12) and urged in the forward select position by a spring (18). The housing and servo piston cooperate to define two fluid chambers (36,42) which are maintained in a separated condition when the forward select position position is established. One chamber (36) is in fluid communication with a fluid system (100,102) that is controlled to provide fluid at two distinct pressure levels, depending upon various vehicle operating parameters. The other chamber (42) is connected with a selectively engageable fluid operated friction clutch (94) which is effective to assist in establishing at least the reverse drive ratio within the transmission. The lowest level of fluid pressure in the one chamber is not sufficient to cause the piston to overcome the spring force and thereby move the clutch to the reverse select position. The second pressure level is, however, sufficient to cause such movement. In the reverse select position, the chambers are fluidly interconnected and the fluid clutch can be engaged by the fluid pressure supplied through the second chamber from the first chamber.

An electronic transmission control in which the shift pattern is adjusted in the event of a sensed clutch or gear failure so that shifting between the nonfailed ratios is carried out in a manner which avoids engine stalling or overspeeding and significant stressing of the transmission gear elements. The original shift point lines involving the failed ratio are removed and replaced with a single shift point line positioned intermediate the original two. The new shift point line is determined in accordance with an arithmetic combination of the original shift point lines, and is limited based on engine overspeed and driveability considerations.

A hydraulic transmission control circuit uses a plurality of solenoid valves (14, 16, 1 20) to control the engagement of friction devices during the shifting of a transmission between gear ratios. A clutch priority valve (34) is provided to prevent the continuous simultaneous engagement of friction devices which will establish more than one ratio. Also provided is a manually controlled valve (3 which permits the operator to determine the range in which the transmission will operate. If the clutch priority valve (34) has been actuated, the transmission ratio can be controlled between a low ratio, for example, second gear, and a high ratio, for example, third or fourth gear, by use of the manual valve (3 in combination with an actuator mode valve (5. The clutch priority valve, when actuated, is also operable to disengage a torque converter clutch.
