In a filling-tube construction (1, 2) for providing a connection between a mould (6) to be filled with molten metal and a mould-filling furnace (3) containing molten metal (5), said mould (6) having at least one casting cavity (7), the lowermost part of each such cavity communicating with a filling duct (8), at least one end of which is open to the outside of said mould (6) and adapted to be temporarily connected to the filling-tube construction (1, 2) to receive molten metal (5) from the mould-filling furnace (3), the mould-filling furnace being adapted to contain molten metal (5) and to transfer said molten metal (5) under a controlled pressure through the filling-tube construction (1, 2) and to the filling duct (8), the filling-tube construction comprises a first section (1) extending from a position close to the bottom of said mould-filling furnace (3) up to an intermediate position closer to the filling duct (8) and at least one separate second section (2) providing a connection from the upper end of the first section (1) to the open end of the filling duct (8) and adapted to provide a fluid-tight connection to the upper end of the first section (1) and the open end of the filling duct (8). In this way an easy adjustment and/or exchange of parts of the filling-tube constructions can be provided by simply adjusting and/or exchanging the second section (2), without disassembly of the connection between the first section (1) and the mould-filling furnace (3). The invention also includes a method of modifying a conventional constructed filling tube to a filling tube as described above.

Method and apparatus for investment casting wherein a ceramic investment mold is disposed in a chamber and communicates with a melt reservoir connected to the mold and having a reservoir volume for holding enough melt to fill the mold. The melt pour cup reservoir is communicated to the mold via an inverted loop feed gate so that the melt is fed from a lower region of the reservoir through the inverted loop feed gate to the mold upon gas pressurization of the melt in the reservoir. The loop feed gate is configured to have a loop region above the melt level in the reservoir so as to prevent melt flow from the reservoir to the more mold cavities in the absence of pressurization. While residing in the reservoir, oxides and other inclusion-forming particles in the melt can float to the upper surface of the melt, whereby the melt fed from the lower region of the reservoir to the mold via the inverted loop melt feed gate includes reduced amount of inclusion-forming particles.

In this invention, a sensor head is provided which includes an eddy current type electromagnetic sensor (2) having a pair of coils (22) disposed in the vicinity of a nonconductive outer shell surface or the inner surface of the lining refractories (26), and the sensor head detects the condition of existence of a conductive panetrant substance in the lining refractory from an induced voltage produced in one coil when an a.c. current is applied to the other coil of the electromagnetic sensor, measures the distances from the sensor head to the outer shell surface or the inner refractory surface at a plurality of reference points set inside or outside the vessel, finds the position of the sensor head with respect to the vessel, and separately or simultaneously detects the thickness of the lining refractories and the penetrant metal by arithmetic operations from data obtained.

Method and casting plant for the production of metal castings in which the molten metal is fed from a heated container (1) to a mould (3) or to a smaller container via a pressure pipe (4), a pressure-generating means (2) and a suction pipe (5). According to the invention the temperature of the metal present in the pressure-generating means (2) is controlled by a heat-generating means (11) in order to maintain the metal at a temperature corresponding to or exceeding its melting point. The metal is present in molten state during its passage through the pressure-generating means (2) and the pipe system. A protective medium is brought to surround at least the pressure-generating means (2) to protect the same during operation and during a downtime period.
