The refining of chromium-containing molten steel by decarburization, reduction, and desulfurization is improved in terms of consumption of argon gas used for blowing molten steel, wear and tear of refractories of the AOD furnace, and consumption of CaO and CaF 2 , etc. by a process which comprises the addition of metallic Al as a reducing agent and CaO as a slag-forming agent to the slag existing after completion of the decarburization, respectively in amounts necessary for the slag, after completion of the subsequent reduction, to acquire a SiO 2 content of not more than 10% and a CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratio in the range of 0.8 to 2.0, thereby enabling the treatments of reduction and desulfurization to proceed simultaneously.

A process for adding calcium to a bath (2) of molten ferrous material is disclosed in which a calcium metal-containing wire (1) is fed through a refractory lance (5) into the bath (2). Recirculatory stirring of the molten ferrous material is accomplished with an inert gas flow through the lance (5). The calcium-containing wire (1) is fed at such a rate that it substantially bends towards the horizontal direction after it leaves the lance (5) and melting of the calcium in the wire (1) occurs primarily in or directly below a region of downwelling of the molten ferrous material. Suitable wire feeding rates will depend upon the disposition of the lance (5) in the bath and the composition (e.g. clad or unclad) and cross-sectional dimensions of the calcium metal-containing wire (1). A preferred apparatus for adding processing elements in wire form directly into a molten material comprises a heat resistant nozzle (60) positionable relative to the surface of the molten material such that an inlet is disposed above the surface and an outlet (84) is disposed beneath the surface; a mechanism (24) for feeding the wire (20) through the nozzle (60) directly into the molten material; and a system (31, 33, 42) for injecting a substantially inert gaseous medium into the molten material together with the wire (20), whereby the inert gas substantially prevents closure of the nozzle (60) by solidified molten material and promotes mixture of the processing elements with the molten material through gas bubble agitation. The apparatus further comprises a substantially gas-tight conduit (44) connected to the nozzle inlet, through which the wire (20) and the inert gaseous medium are delivered to the nozzle (60). A pressure-driven seal (30) prevents atmospheric contamination and prevents loss of inert gas. Passing the wire (20) and gaseous medium through a bore in the nozzle (60) having an elongated, gradually tapered funnel-shaped section (80) adjacent the outlet (84) maximizes the effect of the inert gaseous medium.

[Means for Resolution] An operation method for mechanically stirring chrome-containing molten iron, which comprises a refining process of mechanically stirring chrome-containing molten iron contained in a refining vessel by the use of an impeller having a rotation axis in the vertical direction where the refining vessel is such that the horizontal cross section of the inner wall thereof is circular around the central axis of the vessel in the vertical direction and the impeller, as integrated with the axial rod covered with a refractory, rotates around the central axis of the axial rod, as the rotation axis thereof, wherein: the stirring mode is regularly or irregularly switched, as selected for each stirring charge, between "concentric stirring mode" of stirring the molten iron in a state where the rotation axis of the impeller is centered in the central axis of the vessel and "eccentric stirring mode" of stirring the molten iron in a state where the rotation axis of the impeller is decentered from the central axis of the vessel.

There are provided a method for desulfurizing molten steel, characterized in that a sample taken out from molten steel after the tapping from a converter or during the secondary refining is analyzed rapidly in a high accuracy by a method comprising a high frequency induction heating step wherein the sample is combusted and oxidized under the high frequency induction heating in a pure oxygen atmosphere to convert S in the sample into SO 2 and an analyzing step wherein SO 2 -containing gas produced in the high frequency induction heating step is analyzed through an ultraviolet fluorescence method to quantify S concentration of the sample, whereby S concentration of molten steel after the tapping from the converter can be controlled in a high accuracy to prevent failure of S concentration and also desulfurization time in the secondary refining can be shortened and the amount of the desulfurizer or the like used can be reduced, and a method of manufacturing molten steel by using such a method.

The present invention concerns to an impellor for stirring a melt pool and concerns a melt-pool processing method using same. The impellor includes: an impellor body extending in the length direction; a blowing nozzle which is provided in such a way as to pass through one part at the bottom end of the impellor body; and a blade provided on the upper part of the impellor body. As a result, when embodiments of the present invention are used, a stirring flow produced due to the blade and a stirring flow due to substances blown into the melt-pool via the blowing nozzle correspond to each other, and the two flows are combined such that the overall stirring force is improved. Consequently, it is possible to improve the efficiency of stirring by the impeller as compared with hitherto, and, as a result, refining efficiency in the refining step is improved as the rate of reaction between the melt-pool and additives is increased.

The present invention discloses a straight barrel type vacuum refining device comprising a vacuum chamber and a snorkel; during the vacuum refining the snorkel is inserted into the molten steel of the steel ladle, it is characterized in that, disposing a circulating tube being on the circumference of said snorkel, and blowing argon gas into the snorkel through the nozzles on an inner wall of a circulating tube; said circulating tubes are disposed in layers, the nozzles on the circulating tubes in the same layer are individually controlled as 2-6 in one group; disposing an eccentric gas permeable brick at the bottom of said steel ladle, and blowing argon gas into the steel ladle through the eccentric gas permeable brick, driving a circulating flow molten steel between the steel ladle and the vacuum chamber by using different blowing flow rate combinations of a steel ladle bottom blowing and each individually controlled unit of the circulating tube blowing system. The operation method of the straight barrel type vacuum refining device is: the vacuum refining process uses a combined blown mode of steel ladle bottom eccentric gas permeable brick and the circulating tube of the snorkel, during decarburization the bottom blowing and the circulating tube on the same side as the bottom blowing are strong blowing, and the circulating tube on the other side is weak blowing; during desulfurization, the bottom blowing is strong blowing, and the circulating tubes around the snorkel are all weak blowing.
