A composition of matter comprising a mixture of (i) a sulfide of at least one promoter metal selected from (a) Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Zn, (b) mixtures thereof and (c) mixtures thereof with Fe, (ii) an amorphous sulfide of trivalent chromium and (iii) microcrystallites of metal sulfide of a metal selected from molybdenum, tungsten and mixture thereof. These compositions have been found to be useful hydro-treating catalysts having nitrogen removal activity superior to that of commercial catalysts such as cobalt-molybdate on alumina.

A treated decomposable compound of molybdenum, which has been prepared by the catalytic dehydrogenation of a decomposable compound of molybdenum wherein the molybdenum has a valence state greater than zero or by the treating of the decomposable compound of molybdenum with a reducing agent, is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such treated decomposable compound of molybdenum is then contacted with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Group VIB, Group VIIB, and Group VIII of the Periodic Table to reduce the concentration of metals, sulfur, nitrogen, Ramsbottom carbon residue and/or heavies contained in the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream.

Metals contained in a hydrocarbon containing feed stream are removed by contacting the hydrocarbon containing feed stream under suitable demetallization conditions with hydrogen and a catalyst composition comprising zirconium phosphate and a metal phosphate where the metal is selected from the group consisting of nickel, iron, vanadium and cobalt. The life and activity of the catalyst composition may be increased by introducing a decomposable metal compound selected from the group consisting of the metals of Group V-B, Group Vl-B, Group VII-B and Group VIII of the Periodic Table into the hydrocarbon containing feed stream prior to contacting the hydrocarbon containing feed stream with the catalyst composition.

The present invention relates to an adsorbent, a liquid-phase hydrogenation catalyst composition comprising the adsorbent, a catalyst bed comprising the liquid-phase hydrogenation catalyst composition, and application thereof in adsorption technology or oil liquid-phase hydrogenation technology. The adsorbent comprises a porous material and a hydrogenation active metal supported on the porous material, wherein the adsorbent has an average pore diameter of 2-15 nm, a specific surface area of 200-500 m 2 /g, and the hydrogenation active metal is present in an amout, calculated as metal oxide, of 2.5 wt% or less, based on the total weight of the adsorbent. The adsorbent has a high hydrogen sulfide adsorption efficiency for a long period of time, and can effectively prolong the protection period for the hydrodesulfurization catalyst.
