摘要:
A fiber of a sea-island phase separation structure in which the sea phase is made of a highly orientable and highly crystalline polyvinyl alcohol polymer, the island phase is made of a water-insoluble cellulosic polymer excellent in alkaline liquid absorbing capacity, heat resistance and difficulty of melting, the size of the island is 0.03 to 10 νm and the strength is 3 g/d or above and which can easily be separated into fibrils 0.05 to 8 νm in diameter by wetting the fiber and applying a mechanical stress to the resulting fiber. The above fibril is a hydrophilic and high-strength one which is excellent in the property of capturing fine particles, reinforcing effects, alkaline liquid absorption, and the resistances to heating and melting, does not cause the elution of fiber components in fibrillation, and is freed from the problematic bubbling in beating or the problem of environmental pollution due to a heating solution. The fibril is extremely useful as the separator paper for alkaline batteries, the reinforcing fiber for cement slates, the reinforcing fiber for friction materials, or the like.

Ultra-fine polymeric fibers are produced from various polymeric materials by mixing with thermoplastic poly(vinyl alcohol) and extruding the mixture through a die followed by further orientation. The poly(vinyl alcohol) is extracted to yield liberated ultra-fine polymeric fibers. The polymer utilized can include post-consumer polymer waste.

This invention relates to methods for porous resin moldings, for ultrafine fibers and for ultrafine fiber nonwoven fabrics. In essence, the invention comprises providing a molding, spun fiber or crude nonwoven fabric containing a thermoplastic resin and a special high molecular compound which has an adequate affinity for the thermoplastic resin and able to dissolve rapidly in water and dissolving out the high molecular compound from the molding, spun fiber or crude nonwoven fabric. The methods of the invention involve no risk of explosion or fire hazard in manufacture, free from adverse effects on health, and help curtail the manufacturing time.

Disclosed is a sea-island composite fiber in which the island component is ultrafine fibers having a noncircular cross-section, the ultrafine fibers being uniform in the degree of non-circularity and in the diameter of the circumscribed circle. The sea-island composite fiber comprises an easily soluble polymer as the sea component and a sparingly soluble polymer as the island component, and is characterized in that the island component has a circumscribed-circle diameter in the range of 10-1,000 nm, a dispersion in circumscribed-circle diameter of 1-20%, a degree of non-circularity of 1.2-5.0, and a dispersion in the degree of non-circularity of 1-10%.
