The inductive heating is carried out using at least two inductors (10,11) which at the beginning of processing are together applied to the workpiece W at closely adjacent starting positions which bound a starting zone Zs. This starting zone Zs is heated to the hardening temperature by direct or indirect action of the electromagnetic field of at least one of the inductors (10,11).
