A sharps container (10) for receiving and storing a plurality of needles against accidental dislodgement, includes a plastic cup (20) defining a bottom (22), a top (24), a sidewall (26) connecting the bottom and the top, and a vertically extending central post (30) disposed within and horizontally spaced from the sidewall. A resilient disc (40) is disposed within the cup and defines a plurality of slots (42) and segments (44), the segments being intermediate the slots, and each segment having a free end (46) spaced from the post. A plastic cover (50) for the container defines a plurality of needle-receiving passageways (52) therethrough adjacent the post and communicating with spaces between the post and the segment free ends. Each segment free end is individually deflectable toward the bottom adjacent the post by insertion of a needle downwardly through one of the passageways and then into the space intermediate the post and the segment free end. The disc is of a harder material than a needle to be received so that a segment resists withdrawal of the needle by biting into the needle as the segment free end attempts to return from its deflected orientation during withdrawal of the needle.

A kink-resistant steerable catheter assembly (10) suitable for microwave ablation includes a handle (12), a catheter (14) and a steering control (60). The catheter has the following: [a] a flexible, torque transmitting and axially incompressible proximal or body portion (20) terminating in a proximal end attached to the handle (12), and [b] a flexible and axially compressible distal or tip portion (24) terminating in a distal end. A coaxial cable (50) is disposed in and extends through a large aperture (40) in the catheter proximal portion, and a coaxial cable extension (50') is generally centrally disposed in, substantially fills, and snugly extends through a large lumen in the catheter distal portion to reduce kinking. The control (60) is disposed in and actuatable from the handle (12), for placing tension on one of a pair of steering wires (52) while relaxing tension on the other pair of steering wires (52), thereby to bend the distal end of the coaxial cable extension toward the tensed one of the steering wires.

A balloon pump (10) for a circulatory assist device (118) comprises a pumping chamber (20) of variable volume in which a diaphragm assembly (24) is displaceable between first and second pumping directions to inflate and deflate the balloon (120). The diaphragm assembly comprises a diaphragm (26) sandwiched between a pusher plate (28) and a retainer plate (30), the pusher plate and retainer plate being affixed to an elongate shaft (60) having an external threaded portion disposed in a planetary roller nut (66). A rotor assembly (96) is affixed to the roller nut (66) and a stator assembly (112) is disposed outwardly of the rotor assembly to impart bidirectional rotation to the roller nut to cause the shaft (60) and diaphragm assembly (24) to move in the first and second pumping directions, the pump (10) communicating with a pump control unit (124) and micro-processor (126) for controlling pump operation.

Equipment is diclosed for shielding a catheter (10) such as a balloon-tipped vascular catheter from contamination during tsting and insertion and for shielding a substantial reserve catheter section for use if catheter re-positioning is necessary. As shown, the structure includes two interconnecting envelopes (30,40) which physically isolate the catheter. One envelope (40) is designed to shield the distal end portion of the catheter (10) during testing for lumen patency and balloon inflation. The other envelope (30) is extendible to cover the entire length of catheter (10) intended for insertion into the patient after completion of required tests. The envelope (40) thereafter provides a means for advancement or re-positioning of the catheter (10) or withdrawal of the same without physical contact by the hands or exposure to airborne contaminants. Envelope (30) is collapsible lengthwise of catheter (10) so that it can be withdrawn to expose the catheter tip. The two envelopes (30 and 40) are releasably connected together by coupling means (35).

An electrode-carrying catheter (10) comprises elongate, flexible tubing (12) defining a proximal end (14), a distal end (16), and an electrically insulative outer tubular layer (20) intermediate the ends, the tubing including a flexible electrically-conductive core (42) of wire and a flexible non-conductive core-covering layer (44) of plastic about the core. At least one electrically-conductive ring electrode (30a) is crimped on and flush with the outer surface of the tubing. In order to conduct electrical signals between the proximal end (14) and each of the ring electrodes (30a), a longitudinally-spaced plurality of flexible electrically-conductive wires (45) are helically wound around and at least partially into the core-covering layer (44). The wound wires (45) each has an exposed section (47) beneath a segment of each of the ring electrodes (30a). An electrically-conductive flexible flat ribbon (51) is disposed intermediate each of the ring electrodes (30) and the tubing, each ribbon being electrically and physically joined to a respective one of the wound wires (45) and wrapped about the outer tubular surface (20), and each of the ring electrodes being crimped onto a respective one of the ribbons and the outer tubular surface.
An end electrode (30b) may be crimped on the distal end (16) of the tubing (12), in electrical contact with an extension (42a) of the wire core (42).
